DirectX (DX) is a graphics display language developed by Microsoft as a competitor to Open GL (OGL). DX is actually a very capable competitor, and either system can produce the needed results. That said, each has its own set of problems and limitations, though DX sees revisions much more quickly than OGL—this is due to the fact that DX is wholly-owned by Microsoft, while OGL is an open-standard, and subject to standard bodies evaluation and review.
