Create, modify and merge splines with C4D R17 Pen, Sketch Spline Smooth, Arc and Boolean commands.

New Spline Tools in Cinema 4D Release 17 make it easy to create, modify and combine vector paths. Draw beziers and b-splines with the intuitive new Pen Tool, or sketch paths directly in the view. Use Spline Smooth to clean up splines, or tweak them with sculpt-like modifiers. With the Spline Arc tool, you can quickly draw precise arcs. New spline boolean commands and updates to Spline Mask make it easy merge many paths in Illustrator-like Pathfinder operations.

This is a quick start video for the new spline tools in Cinema 4D. My goal is to show you the essentials of these new tools so that you can get up to speed and back to work as quickly as possible. I'm gonna skip over some of the details, but I will focus on the essentials of the new pen, sketch, spline smooth, spline arc tools, as well as these Boolean tools that you see here on the right. To begin, I'm gonna create a new scene file, go ahead and do the same. And then, I'm going to go into my four way view and then my front view so that I'm drawing in a flat plane. I'm gonna start by selecting my pen tool, which allows me to draw out splines simply by clicking. A single click is gonna add a hard edged point. A click and drag is going to add in a point with a tangent, and notice that as I move my point around, but have not yet clicked I'm getting a preview of how my tangent is impacting this and that is quite handy. Now let's say I have done some drawing and then for whatever reason maybe I want to grab a coffee, I take a break. If I want to leave my current drawing, I can just hit the escape key. Now in previous versions that meant I had to move over to a different tool to continue, not in this version. I can simply click on the last point that I was drawing with and continue drawing on from there. If I want to close my spline, all I have to do is click on the very first point, you'll see that we get a close spline icon and click. Now let's say I wanna go back and modify some of these points, well I have a few different methods of doing that. I can double click on a point to change it's tangents from hard to soft or if I would like, I can click and drag on any one of these edge segments and it's gonna drag out some tangents for me. If I want to manipulate a tangent but break them, I can hold down the shift key and when I click and drag it allows me to break my tangents and just manipulate that curve. Now let's say I want to extrude this. I'm gonna drag this into an extrude object and I can come in and start adding in some sub-segments, so I'm gonna select this spline and click in some additional segments here. What you'll notice is those get added in and they are punching out a hole inside of my spline in real-time. Now what if for example I wanted to draw a different type of spline? Well if I'm not comfortable with Bezier, I can change my type to something like B spline or cubic and all I have to do is click out and I will get a preview of how these other spline types are going to interpolate. And this is really helpful for the B spline which can be a little unintuitive if your not use to working with it initially. So that is now nice and easy to work with and easy to see where you are headed. Now that I've drawn out some points, I can also modify them. So I can go back in here, select some of these original points, I'm gonna pull it out of this extrude object for a bit and I can tweak them with my spline pen tool much like the polygon pen tool. So if I click and drag on a point, I can manipulate its position. If I right click on a point, I can adjust its tangents and if I want to select two points or multiple points I can just select an edge like this hold down shift and keep selecting these different segments. Those are the spline drawing tools. In addition to spline drawing, there are these new spline sketching tools and the spline sketch tool allows you to quickly rough out a spline. So let's say I want to go into my top view and draw out a path for an object to move along. I can just click and drag to draw it out like so, and already my curve has got some smoothing. Now if I wanted, I could crank up this stroke smoothing option and you will notice that I get a much smoother curve as I draw. If I want to go back and, say, fix this curve, I have access to the spline smooth tool, which acts a lot like the smoothing brush in the sculpt tools in Cinema 4D. To adjust its size I middle mouse click and drag which will adjust its radius. If I click and drag with this tool, you'll see that it is adjusting the smoothing, if I click and drag with my middle mouse button down, I can adjust the strength and I can have a slower impact on the curve. Now one thing to keep in mind as you use this tool is that it is destructive. It is adding and deleting points it's not necessarily going to keep your point order exactly the same, so I would do this early in the process before you have started doing any complex modeling if you can avoid it. Now there's some other fun aspects to this. For example, the spiral brush allows you to take your points, and let's crank up the strength a bit and get these strange water like splines, and I can do this in three dimensions as well. Next up, on the complete opposite direction is the spline arc tool and I'm just gonna create a new scene for this one. What it allows you to do is draw out very detailed arcs. So click and drag to start your drag out, you'll get a preview of where a continuation of your previous line might be, or if you wanna turn that first line segment into an arc, click and drag on it and manipulate. You'll notice that you have the ability to adjust the center point and also if I click and drag over here I'll get a continuation, so clicking and dragging a few times I can get this cool sine wave pattern and the escape key finishes drawing that in. Now let's say I had a more rigid structure like this, I can come in here with my spline arc tool and click and drag on any of the segments and get a very precise semicircle. Okay, as a quick and dirty introduction to displaying drawing and sketching tools, but before I finish up I wanna talk about the Spline Boolean tools that you see here on the right. These are like the spline mask tool that you saw in previous versions of Cinema 4D except that they are now one-stop operations. So for example, I can come in here and add a circle to my scene and I'm gonna drag out another copy and I can take the first circle and then the second one here and run a spline subtract and it will subtract one from the other. Now if you're trying to figure out which is gonna get subtracted from which, let's say I select a bunch of different splines and I wanna subtract all of them from this circle back here. You select your cutters first by holding down shift and selecting them and then you hold down shift and you click on the spline that you want to cut from. The final spline that you select is gonna show up in the objects manager with a slightly lighter yellow on its name and that tells us that's the one that gonna be the last one standing even after all these operations have happened to it. Spline subtract is gonna cut those pieces away, spline union will add them together and the others do pretty much what you'd expect. The other cool feature that you may have just noticed it is that it supports more than two splines at a time, which you can now also use with the spline mask tool. So add a spline mask, drag in all your splines and change your spline mask to something like union and just ensure that you have the correct access selected. There we have it, a live interaction between multiple splines without having to nest them in a really ugly hierarchy. Well thank you very much for watching this. Aagain, this is a quick and dirty introduction to the new spline tools in Cinema 4D, there's a lot more to go into and we plan on posting some reference videos in the future. But I just wanted to get you up to speed as quickly as possible. Have fun.
