Quickly override materials for lighting and custom matte passes

The Material Override option in the Cinema 4D Release 17 Render Settings makes it easy to dynamically replace all or selected materials in your project, and is a perfect companion to Cinema 4D's Take System. Learn how to use Material Override with the Variation Shader and Take System to generate a custom Material Buffer pass. The Material Override can also be used to generate clay render or lighting passes.

With global material override you can easily override all the materials in your scene or just specific materials and you can even choose which channels you want to override. In this scene we've got lots of materials spread throughout the hierarchy of the skateboard and replacing all these materials would be a tedious job. But now I can simply open the render settings and enable the material override option. If I do just this and nothing else Cinema 4D will replace all of those materials with its own default material. Now you'll notice that the transparency and displacement is actually still being retained from the original materials. And that's because by default Cinema 4D will preserve the transparency, bump, normal, alpha and displacement channels because those channels often define the shape of an object. If we want to override those channels as well, we can simply uncheck the box to preserve that channel. So if we uncheck transparency and displacement and render again you'll see that the skateboard wheels are now going to render completely solid with no displacement. This functionality can be handy if you want to focus on the lighting of a scene without the textures. Or maybe you want to send a client a preview but the texturing just isn't done yet. If you want to highlight a specific material you can just drag it into the materials list here in the material override settings and as long as the mode is set to exclude, that material will be excluded from the override, meaning that material will render while all the others are replaced. So now you can see that we're getting the orange texture here on the deck while all the other textures are being replaced with Cinema 4D's default material. Now we can swap that effect as well. We can switch the mode to include and now only the deck material will be replaced with Cinema 4D's default material and all of the other materials will render as they were originally defined. One of my favorite uses of material override is to generate special map passes like a single pass identifying all the materials in this scene. To do this we'll use the take system and the variation shader. So let's go ahead and create a new material and we'll double click to open that material in the material editor and I'm going to go ahead and rename this variation. We only need the luminance channel here so we'll disable color and reflectance and in the luminance channel I want to go ahead and add a new variation shader. When using the variation shader to generate solid colors like we want for our matte, we need to make sure that we switch the random color mode here in the options from normal to replace. And that way your color won't be mixed with any other color. Now we need to apply this material as an override within the render settings. But first we want to create a new child render setting so we don't affect the beauty pass and we'll go ahead and rename this "Matte Pass." I'll go ahead and enable the matte pass and make sure it's selected and we want to go ahead and enable the material override. And now we can just drag the variation material into the custom material slot and now that material will be used in place of all the existing materials in this scene. We'll go ahead and disable the option to preserve transparency so that the transparent materials are rendered with a solid matte. Because this is a simple matte pass, we can go ahead and disable global illumination and switch the renderer into the standard render engine so things render a bit faster. We do want to make sure to leave the lens distortion effect enabled so that the matte is distorted in the same way as our final beauty render. So let's go ahead and render this pass and see what it looks like. Now we get a separate color for each material and each individual object and if we want to change the colors that are applied and make them a little bit more random, we can always go in and adjust the random seed. We can also adjust the object variation. Right now the material is rendering a separate color for each individual object. If we change this object variation to object name, it's actually going to render the same color for objects that have the same name. So what that's going to result in is a pass where all of our front wheels on each skateboard are always the same color and all the back wheels are always the same color and the deck is always the same color and so on and so forth. So I can easily replace or adjust the same material and object combination across all of my skateboards. Now let's take a look at how we would limit the objects that are shown in this pass. I've got some MoText here that's disabled. I'll just enable it and it's going to put some text right in front of our skateboards. So if we render now that text is also going to be in the pass and it's going to have that same variation shader applied. Now this can actually be handy because often we want to isolate a selection set or a sub object like the ones built into the MoText and extrude objects. In this case, though, we don't want the text to appear in the matte at all. So to accomplish this we'll turn the logo text into a matte object using a compositing tag. We could put the compositing tag directly on the object, but a more flexible option is to use takes and override groups. So we'll go into the take manager and create a new take for our matte pass. I want to make sure to assign the matte pass render setting to this take and we also want to go ahead and create a new override group. If we unfold this, we'll see the override group in the right hand side. Override groups are handy because they allow you to apply the same tag to multiple objects located throughout your hierarchy. We're going to go ahead and rename this "Matte" and I want to go ahead and apply a compositing tag. Now we can adjust the compositing tag settings here in the take specific attributes. If the take attributes aren't open for you you can click this button right here in the upper right corner of the take manager. And in the compositing tag we'll enable the matte object option and we'll just leave the color black. Now all we need to do is assign the objects that should be treated as matte objects. So we'll go back into the object manager and grab the MoText and drag it into the takes manager and underneath the matte override group. So now that compositing tag is going to be applied to this object and if we had more objects we wanted to matte we could just drag them in here as well. Now when we render the matte pass you'll see that the text is actually including the objects in the matte but it's not visible itself. So let's go ahead and make sure that the main take is selected and the beauty render setting is selected for the main take and we'll go ahead and render all takes to the picture viewer and once that's done we can jump into After Effects and take a look at how we might use this pass. So here in After Effects I have our final render layered over our footage and I also have a separate matte pass that I have loaded into the comp. We can go ahead and just add a color key to this matte pass and pick the color for, say for instance, the decks in order to map those out and we might need to adjust the color tolerance just a bit. Now I've also created a layer that copies our final render but uses C-C toner to adjust the color on the skateboards and I'm going to apply that as an alpha inverted matte. So now we have our skateboards all appearing in this blue color. So that's how the material override works in conjunction with the variation shader and the take system to generate lots of different possibilities.
