In order for the Renderer to calculate the indexes of refraction for dielectric objects correctly, it needs to know exactly when a ray enters a medium and when it exits.
In this video I will show you how a ray travels through many refractive mediums and how it calculates each refraction by using a method called "Nested Dielectrics".
