Setting up a material that has both specular and reflective properties using the default specular.

In this video you will walk through the steps to create a material that has both a specular layer and a reflective layer, starting with the Default Specular layer. This includes setting up the basic scene objects, adding a new reflectance layer, adjusting the Specular and Reflection strengths, using the layer blending and adjusting the layer hierarchy, using the Layer Mask Amount and adding fresnel to the reflection layer.

- In this video, we're going to take a look at how to create a basic material using a specular and reflection using the reflectance channel in Cinema 4D R16. The first thing that we'll do is just set up the layout to allow us to see the rendered image because we're not really going to be moving around the scene a whole lot. So go to the window menu and then choose the picture viewer and dock this into the interface. Now, if we click render, we'll be able to see the rendered image in the picture viewer. The next thing that we'll do is just take a look at some of the elements inside the scene. We do have a rim and fill light but those have been disabled so we're only seeing the contribution from the key light here. And we also have a sky object that is in the scene but there is no material applied to this so we're also going to create a environment material for the reflection. So to start we will create a new material and then we're going to go to the content browser under presets and then find prime so that we're using something everybody can use. And then go to presets, light setups and HDRI. And in here we can find a selection of different environments to use for our reflections. Now, I think what we will use is just the studio 021 HDR. And we're going to drag that into the color field here and under the basic we can just turn off reflectance because the only thing we're going to be using is the color channel. We can go back to objects and we will just apply that to the sky object. Now, the sky object also has a compositing tag and in here we just have scene by camera turned off so the sky is not going to be visible in the final render. With this set up we're ready to start on creating the actual material for the owl body. So, to get started with creating this material, the first thing we'll do is create a new material and rename this to "owl body." We will then apply this material to the owl body so that we can see the changes that we're going to be making. We're also going to use the attribute manager here to adjust the properties for this material. So, under the color channel we'll start by creating a darker color so that we can see the specular pop against the surface and we'll render again just to see the base that we're going to be working with. Now, if we go to the reflectance channel, you'll see that there's already a default specular that is added here and if we click on the default specular, we'll be able to see the properties for this layer. The first thing to note is the layer is set to the add blend mode and this is going to be how this layer blends with any other layers that we add. Next, the type that is being used is the specular blend legacy and all of the parameters here are going to match what you would see in previous versions of Cinema 4D. The next thing that we have is the attenuation which is set to additive and this is how the specular is blending with the color channel. Next, the specular strength is controlling the actual intensity of this specular itself and right now it's set to 20% which is perfectly safe because it is using the additive attenuation. Now, to keep things a little bit more consistent how you'd work with actual reflection layers, it's a good idea to set the specular strength to 100%. This just means that you're getting the full contribution from the specular layer itself and if we go ahead and render you'll see the results of that. If you then want to control the strength of the specular on the object, what we're going to use instead is the slider beside the default specular layer. And this is controlling the layer mask amount. So, we can now use this to effectively control the strength of the specular. And this is going to be something that will be consistent with working with the reflection layers. So again we can click on render and see that we have lowered the amount of the specular highlight here. Now that the specular's set up we want to add the layer for the reflection. So, we're going to click on the add button and then choose one of the reflection models here. The different models that you can choose from would be Beckmann, GGX, Phong, Ward or the reflection legacy. Since we want to start working with the newer models, we're going to just select the Beckmann model. Now, you really do have a lot of different options and the only thing that's really going to change between these first four models is the way that the falloff is controlled. And this isn't going to be something that you'll really notice until you start adding in roughness to your actual layer. Now, by default, the Beckmann is going to come in with a reflection strength of 100% and a specular strength of 20%. Since we want this layer to only control the reflection, we're going to start by reducing the specular strength. It's also good to notice that the attenuation method is set to average which means it's going to overwrite the entire contribution to the color channel and if we were to render, what we're going to see is a 100% reflective object. And in this case we're only seeing the reflection from the area light so what we'll want to do is just make sure that the sky object is set to be seen by render and we'll render again. And now you can see the reflection of the studio space that we set as the HDR. Now, you'll notice here that with the reflection the reflective layer itself is set to normal which means it also overwrites the specular layer. So to get a blend between the two of these, we need to reduce the layer mask amount for the reflective layer. And as soon as we do that you'll see that we can start getting some of that specular coming through again. Now, if we wanted to have this object be 100% reflective and still have the contribution from the default specular, what we need to do is set the default specular layer so that it is above our reflective layer. Since it is set to add mode, it's going to be added on top of the reflection that we have created. Once we have this set up, we have everything we need to start working with this simple material. So, again to adjust the strength of the reflection, we can simply adjust the layer mask amount and if we wanna adjust the strength of the specular we can adjust the layer mask amount for that as well and we can render to see the final results of these two layers working together. The next thing we'll take a look at is adding a Fresnel to our reflection layer. In previous versions of Cinema 4D, this is something that we would have done using the Fresnel shader and that would be just going into the shader list and choosing Fresnel. And this is still something that we wanna do if we want it to have exact control or artistic control over the Fresnel shading. And in this case we would add that to the layer mask which is going to be modulated by the layer mask amount. But in the case of creating a physically accurate Fresnel, what we can do is go to the layer Fresnel dropdown and then from the dropdown menu here for the Fresnel, we can choose dielectric which is going to be our non-conductive material so just plastic or water or glass or a conductor which would be for metals. In this case we want to have something that is plastic or glass. So we're going to choose dielectric. And this sets the Fresnel onto the reflective layer. We can then use the index of refraction to control the strength of that Fresnel effect. The contribution from the Fresnel effect is going to be mixed with the layer mask amount. So, if we click render right now, you'll see that the reflective properties are going to be fairly faint and in this case we can go back to our layer mask amount and increase this if we want to get something that's a bit brighter. So, just to recap what we did here in this video is we started with the default specular layer and we changed the specular strength from 20% to 100% just meaning that we get a full contribution from the specular layer. We then adjusted the overall strength of the specular layer using the layer mask amount. For the reflective layer that we added, we decreased the specular strength contribution and left the reflection strength at 100%. We then adjusted the layer mask amount to control the overall reflection of this layer. We also added the Fresnel effect in here to control the fall off of this reflection based on the camera angle. Working this way keeps everything consistent for controlling your reflective layer strengths and provides an easy way to adjust those without diving in to the actual reflection strength, specular strength or worrying too much about what your attenuation is set to. And this gives you enough to start working with a basic reflective and specular material inside Cinema 4D R16.
