One of the hardest materials to render physically accurate and in reasonable amounts of time are Refractive materials like Water and Glass, and it gets even harder when many of these materials interact with each other. For example a Glass filled with wine, ice and some bubbles.
In this series we will dive deep into the underlying concepts of Nested Dielectrics and see how to setup our models and materials for the best possible outcome.
Most of the information in this series applies to Cinema 4D’s Classic Renderers (Standard and Physical), and also Redshift.
Amongst other things, I will show you some frequent mistakes users do when setting up Refractive Objects, the importance of modeling and polygon normals, Index Of Refraction (IOR), and how a ray travels through multiple mediums.
