- Another very interesting way of creating 3D geometry is by using the Lathe generator. The Lathe generator is ideal for objects that have rotational symmetry, drinking glasses, bottles, buckets, lightsabers, chess pawns and many other object limited only by your imagination. Let's make a lightsaber. So what I have here is two splines that came in from Illustrator. The blade and the handle. We have some minor issues. So let's go and fix them. First of all these splines are closed. I don't want them closed. So you select your spline, you go to the Attributes Manager, and in the Object tab, where it says closed spline, you uncheck this and now it's open. Select the handle and now it's open as well. So problem one is solved. The second problem is the following. If I go to my front view, you will see that this object crosses over the global Y-axis. This is going to be a problem, because by default the Lathe object spins things around its local Y-axis. So we're gonna have a crossover here. You'll understand what happens later on. What I need to do is move my axis for this spline so that it is on the bottommost point and to the rightmost point so it aligns with this point here. How do we do that? Well, let's go and see. Go to mesh, axis center, axis center and I want it to go to the maximum X because it's towards this direction and the minimum Y. There you go, execute. And there it is. Now I can go and zero out the coordinates. Double click zero, tab, zero, press enter and it's right there in the middle only halfway over our Y-axis, fantastic. Let's do the same thing for the handle. Let's go here and I'm going to keep the same settings. One little difference, I'm going to make this plus Y. So I want the axis to be on the top. Zero, zero, excellent. The final thing is I want to scale this up a bit. So let me close this. I don't need it anymore, take my scale tool and eyeball it. Maybe that's too big. I think that's good. Then take my move tool and move it slightly up. So now we have these two splines in place. Let me show you how to use the Lathe generator. Let's go and create one, Lathe. And I'm going to drop the blade as a child of the Lathe and look at this, tt spins it around and creates this fantastic lightsaber blade. I'm going to create another Lathe generator and drop the handle and look at that, we have a fantastic handle. So with these swift moves you've managed to create a beautiful lightsaber. I'd just like to show you a couple more things. I'm going to create a primitive circle, get my scale tool, click and drag to make it smaller, and then use my move tool to move it over the Y-axis. I'm going to go and create a Lathe generator and make the circle a child of the Lathe generator. And it creates a Torus. If I select the Lathe, you will see that in the object tab we have the angle, how much of a circle it covers and actually it can overlap itself. It is useful under certain circumstances. The subdivisions, let's go here and add our lines to see our subdivisions more or less. And then we have this fantastic setting, which is called, movement, which actually moves the Lathe towards the Y direction. This means that if we have more than 360 degrees we can make worms or anything else you want. And then we have scaling. So we can make escargot. So the Lathe can be used as the snail modeling tool. And if you go to caps, we can take care of the caps. First of all, let's make them N-gons, and we can add nice fillet caps as usual. So don't forget the rules. Make sure the spline is over the Y-axis and a child of the Lathe. That's how simple it is to make cool rotational geometry. May the Lathe be with you, young Padawan. Is that too cheesy?
No quiero cerrados.
