A tutorial for exporting animation to 3ds Max (FBX not working)

I’m in the process getting back into C4D but until I can get fully up and running I’m in need of help. I would really appreciate a tutorial on how to port animation between C4D to 3ds Max. Baking keys to FBX hasn’t worked thus far.

Thank you

Hi theresa.castagnola,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I feel you want to have that more quickly!

Please try the following:
After exporting FBX (Cinema 4D), create a new scene in Cinema 4D and File> Merge the FBX. That is just a test to see if what you have is working.

3D Max is from Autodesk, the company that bought the app that produced the “native” FBX, AKA Filmbox, and later renamed MotionBuilder.

That said, I would be surprised if 3D Max had any problems opening FBX.

You can share in the Q&A forum an example FBX, and I will have a look at it.

All the best

Hi Dr. Sassi,
I tried the importing the .FBX back into C4D and still nothing. I’m now wondering if it’s even possible to export out an object animated with the Spline Wrap modifier?

Thank you

Hi theresa.castagnola,

That is nothing that an FBX can do this way. You need to convert the animation into PLA. (Point Level Animation)

This can be done with “Cappucino” (Shift+C, then type the name, but not in the correct Italian way, like you would when searching the help, then it is Cappuccino), or if there are only a few key positions, manually with the PLA animation option.

Once the PLA information is stored in the Object, switch off any deformer that leads to the animation, and check if the animation is as expected.

Now, export and use the PLA option to create an FBX file and a PLA folder. Never separate these two!

With that, you can re-import to check if it is working.

The FBX settings need the PLA enabled

If all is fine, you can check with other apps.

Hi Dr. Sassi,
This seems like a powerful workflow. However, the PLA version it creates is warping around for some reason.

Hi theresa.castagnola,

With this post, you moved this thread into a Q&A theme. Please post a scene file in the Q&A forum, as I mentioned above. Thank you. Images are limited.
Make sure after PLA to switch the Deformer off! Otherwise, you have the information doubled. More … when you post in the Q&A forum.

Thanks a lot, theresa.castagnola!

I’m happy to look into it. Just share a scene file, and I hope I can support your project.

Cheers
