Hello!
Just today I heard about the new OSL shader in Cinema and Redshift. But when I try to create one, I don’t get the option.
In the node manager I have a new RS material, I hit Shift C to search osl and nothing comes up. I’m in C4d S24, in RS node space, with RS render settings. RS version - 3.0.62. Please help! Thanks!
I have lots of trouble understanding links like Trello and help.maxon. Just the way my brain works (or doesn’t work). Ha. :/
But can I ask, would you say there’s a decent chance that OSL will work if I update to R25 or even S26?
Also, in your screen shot, you have the Shader Graph open (I only seem to be able to use the other view).
If I can get that happening on my iMac, might that help?
Maxon support is awful (sent them a question about Red Giant on 5/9 - still no reply, always like that).

I checked it on four different Macs. The oldest of the four is a “late 2015”, 27”, running OS 11.3 and S26, while RS3D is 3.5 (which comes with S26)
This Mac has an old AMD 4GB graphics card (AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4 GB), and I would say if it runs here, chances are great it runs on many other iMacs.
You might check with support as well, as the number of possible combinations is certainly larger.
Last week we had a worldwide employee meeting, which included the whole support team, of course. So, they were supposed not to work. Sorry about that. Thanks for understanding.
I just installed R26 and it’s a completely different animal.
Can you please suggest a good, clear, video that I could watch and learn how to set up the interface in a way that makes sense to me?
I learn best from videos.
The installation seemed to go fine. I updated the Maxon installer, and Redshift install seemed good (it’s in the R26 plugins folder). But in the interface, when I go to ‘Extensions’ towards the bottom it says “Get Redshift”. ?
I have my external graphics card on and RS selected in the Render settings. I watched a video saying once you select Redshift in render settings, lights (and cameras) automatically come in as Redshift lights, etc,..
But I don’t see where to select a light. Redshift or otherwise. :(
When I go to ‘Create’ > Redshift > Lights, and select something like Dome, it comes into the palette as a material.
Please look in the upper right corner of the interface; there is a slider: New Layout. Perhaps it helps to move that slider to the left?
However, the new interface organization is based on observations, and so far, I know to reduce Mouse-Milage. Yes, these (R25) changes might take a while to sink in, and when you have strong muscle memory, it might be even annoying during the first weeks. If you work in a particular area, it should be easy to customize it to your needs. I know that people who are generalists have a much longer time to get used to it.
Please check with the support what license type you have for Redshift 3D. That was my question about plug-ins etc. Also, if you have the current Maxon App [3] installed. https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center
As for RS, I have a 1-year Commercial license for Cinema 4D & Redshift. So, shouldn’t it be showing up under ‘Extensions’?
Instead of saying “Get Redshift”? It is in the R26 plugins folder in Applications.
I’m not aware of any procedural decision why that is. But perhaps, one has two licenses of Cinema 4D and only one Redshift 3D license; then I would expect that someone complains that it was installed even though no license was wanted to be used on that machine for RS3D. Something like that. The combinations of setups are nearly endless.
My take on it would be better to install it based on a command to have it automatically installed.
Get Redshift is a little bit blurry, I agree. “Check your Redshift 3D options” would be better.
I shut down my Mac, restarted, then opened Cinema and the Maxon App 3 and it said the same thing: Cinema 4d and Redshift - both updated, installed and ready to use (green check marks next to both). So I opened a project I built in S24, set the Render Settings to Redshift, did a render, it seems fine. I turned on the Activity Monitor and saw that my RX 6900 was doing 95% of the work.
So I guess that means Redshift IS woking in R26…?? Right? (even though in Extensions it still says “Get Redshift”) Please let me know.
After that I created a RS material, opened Node Manager and searched OSL, and it showed up!
I was able to paste some code in from the RS GitHub page, load and/or compile, and rendered one out.
One thing, I created and saved a bunch of materials in S24. Is there some way to bring them into R26?
I used to do: Create > Load Material Preset > User > Materials. Any possibilities?
If it works, I’m not sure what to add. Perhaps check the Maxon app or look at the Cinema 4D preference. Render, which version do you have: Is it 3.5?

I would create, as Lionel mentioned, a specific folder for those materials for the Asset Manager.

The Asset Browser Icon is not in S26 on the left upper corner.
I watched those videos and they will be a huge help, but I have to fully wrap my head around the details which will take a while. So I wanted to ask: is the basic idea that I would open S24, bring in the materials I want to eventually use in R26, save them as Assets (into a “Create New Database” folder I’d keep on my Mac). Then open R26 and import them to a new database there?

Since I do not answer from memory (99% of the time), things might change (even a change in the OS might mess things up, so telling what was working before is un-wise. I checked the S24 to S26 flow. Works fine here.
Create a folder and place it in the Preferences> Asset Browser> Databases.
Drag the object or Material into the sidebar of the Asset Browser. A Window will open (Save Asset). Make your decisions; see image.
Start S26, and open that folder in the Asset Browser List.
You should now find your objects in the Asset Browser (if not, use the search).
If the object doesn’t show even after the search: uncheck the folder in the preferences and check it (back on) again. If that doesn’t refresh it, restart.
It is always a good idea to check the “Uncategorized” Folder.
