Dear reader,
I tried serval times to make a thickness to my object. Cloth, explosion, extrude with caps… but no good precise effect.
Can you explaine how I make a -3 mm thickness to my object?

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,
Michiel van der Velden

Hi Michiel van der Velden,

Please have a look at the file below:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/YXCaNcY393QbYVmX6vU82SZG98g4inWOIkb5Hkm2hZb

(A finer Voxel Size might be needed.)

I have set up all parts, so pretty much all areas are around 3mm. Please check this carefully before you might print that. This is just an example.

The manual way would be to extrude the object while Preserve Groups is off. Then the 0.3mm can be set up precisely while leaving the edges. The edges need then manual treatment. As you can see in my example, the edge areas are mostly 3mm, which leads to round edges. IF they were sharp, the material would be thicker in those areas.

All the best

[Original thread title: Make an object thick?]

Hi jdiez,

The setup was already in the file you have re-shared, which makes me believe a quick run-through might be the best idea.

Please have a look here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/IHr3v7Lijiz1b40XBJEq2RIXNhZwKTPU2CqMFDwNkTN
You can download the clip and use either “j-k-l” or other Quick Time options to see a step by step.

To model something like this would require a lot of steps, as just Extruding all, or using a Normal Move, would not give the edges the same thickness. The model above, which you had linked from the thread (yes, I merged both threads), shows this problem already with this simple shape.

Use in the Volume Mesher the Adaptive options to optimize the polygon density. (see image)

I used the Volume modeling here, allowing me to throw many parts into it while keeping them adjustable. The Volume object could then be refined or even re-meshed if needed.

Enjoy your weekend

Sorry Dr.Sassi!
I attached the wrong file! This is the correct one. If I apply the Volume mesher to this object, I can make it work¿?

Thanks again!
Javier

Hi Javier,

Please have a look here:

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/e4b0UNIucmWaAiMIFQqTAgF0NwAuEpnaIsBRnSd6vsb

I would say these are the six options to do it for this model, while others might be more effort. (I increased the points for the Volume option with the subdivide>Smooth option.

Cheers

Hi Dr.Sassi!

Thanks a lot! That’s great to know them! Solidify works just fine. I usually get lost with simple things with so many tools in C4d!

You’re very welcome, jdiez.

I think it was time to share a file like that. Thanks for asking.

Have a great Sunday.
