Dragging materials with dependencies into Asset Browser

I have a number of Redshift Materials that I would like to store inside the new asset browser. If I drag and drop from the material view to an asset folder the material shows up black, but the dependency files import properly. Dragging the material to the object looks ok in the standard viewer, but it does not show up in the Redshift Viewer. Dragging straight from the material manager to the object looks fine in both the standard and Redshift viewers. The strange thing is that I do see the icon represented correctly in the asset browser for a second and then it goes to black.

Hi punch,

It is in the memory, and after you dragged it in the Asset Browser, it is obviously out of the memory. Indicating a path problem, most likely.
Where is the Texture, and has the material a full path or just the name in the Texture field?

If you would drag the material in a new scene file and share that, I could have a look, even in this case, it is limited information.

I can’t reproduce it here; perhaps I miss a step. Do you use RS or C4D nodes?

When you drag the material into a new scene, what is the Project Asset manager telling you?

Do you have created a new folder in the Preferences> Asset Browser> Databases
Will the same happen if you place the Textures first in the same Asset Browser folder?

Perhaps check with the support:

Sorry to have no clear path here.

All the best

Thanks for your help. It really only seems to be a RedShift issue. Here is a screen recording.

I will try playing around with populating the Asset Browser folder to see how that works.

The material was purchased from the Poligon Website and converted to a Redshift material with their plugin. The plugin can convert to Redshift or Physical. The Physical material version works fine and shows up in the asset folder correctly. Thanks Sassi

Thanks for the screen capture, punch, that answers a few questions.

Generate Preview isn’t working in Asset Browser?

One more question, if you don’t mind, and that is a wild guess, so I might waste your time:

Could you drag the material (black preview) from the Asset Browser to the Material Manager?
Rename it and render the material.
Then drag it again to the Asset Browser. (Better now?)

Sorry, I would like to give you a straightforward procedure, instead of questions.

Cheers

That doesn’t seem to work.

I have no clue where these shader files are being stored when the database is set to Preferences. I have tried creating my own Database and moving the material and the images subset over, but that doesn’t seem to help.

I think it’s strange that everything seems to be working fine. Materials drag into the material manager just fine. They apply to objects correctly in the standard renderer, it’s just the Redshift side of things that isn’t working.
When I go into the Redshift shader graph, all looks fine, image media seems to be attached to all the correct nodes.

Well, we’ll see, maybe it’s a fix that comes later. Typical me, I break the new toy as soon as I open it wink This asset browser is a game changer.

Thanks Dr. Sassi

You’re very welcome, punch, even we haven’t found the solution yet.

I assume that all options are explored:
https://help.maxon.net/c4d/s24/en-us/Default.htm#html/60627.html
E.g.:
Create> Add Material to Database

Two things need to be clear:
A Database is an actual folder on your drive that holds the content.
A category is just an organizational interface that provides sorting options.
(like any folder hierarchy does, but here it doesn’t hold the content itself.)

When I set up a folder in the Preferences> Asset Browser> Databases
You get the place where assets can be stored.

If you create a new folder inside the Asset Browser, you create a new Category.

Since I have no luck getting a black preview, you need to check with the tech support:
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center

My best wishes
