Creating a UV Map from polygon selections

Hello!
I don’t have a project file right now, but I have a theoretical question.
If I have a cylinder with two caps that have different selection tags and different textures assigned per tag, is there a way to create a set of UV’s that includes both?
I know there is baking, but I’d like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

I would have two answers here. (Is texture the surface or the image? Hence the two files.)

File 01 shows that a single texture is used for the two caps and the main area of the Cylinder. This means they share the space of a single texture, and that requires that there are no overlaps (if the texture should be unique in each of the three areas).

In file 11, the UV overlaps, as the shared UV tag will have no conflict based on the three materials with three different Selection Tags. Each of the three materials will use a different texture and uses the most area of the texture. (Mostly, means here a circle would use roughly 3/4 of it.)

Is this answering your question?

Thank you Sassi!
So what I need is closer to File 11, but I would also like to export the UV map from BP into PSD so I can do some work on the the textures.  So ideally I would need them to not be overlapping.  Is it possible to do that?  I’m guessing that if my textures are 2048x2048 and I want to have three of them on the UV layout, I’d have to create a 6 x 2048 texture to combine them somehow?
Also I should say that right now my two textures are using a flat projection, from which I can generate UV coords, but I’m guessing that they would then each have their own UV tag….

Thanks, and sorry if this is not clear…

Maybe it helps with this project file…I didn’t include the textures because of confidentiality reasons, but there are textures in the color channels that are 2048x2048

Hi Alex,

I checked “obj/mtl” with one UV and an extra selection for a different material. It works.

Hello Sassi

Sorry, I think I’m missing something, where did you check “obj/mlt”?

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

You mentioned you wanted to use Ps as editor.

So I exported the file as obj/mtl and opened it in Ps.

The native plugin is not working for me.

All the best

You mean as an OBJ file and import into PSD?
Didn’t think of that!

Alex, the advantage of the mtl file is that any text editor can change things in it.

If you like to open the file but with different textures in it, place the texture in the folder and change the name of the file in the mtl.

ENJOY
