Extrude Profile modifications?

is it possible to use a spline to modify the profile of an Extrude shape?

I don’t just want my extrusion to have straight sides with bevelled caps, i’d like to use a profile to add more detail to the sides, ut i’m not sure how to achieve this.

any suggestions?

thanks
adam

Hi Adam,

The Extrude Object uses a given profile-spline and creates an object that follows this information. Caps are the other feature besides extruding. Nothing else is in this tool is available.

https://help.maxon.net/s22/us/index.html#OEXTRUDE

If you use a straight Spline, besides the profile-spline, you can use a Sweep Object, as the straight Spline is turning this into an Extrude.
The Sweep has in the Object> Detail a few more options.

Since you have not specified what changes you like to have, I can’t tell you anything else. Other objects might be useful to get more details, but without more specifics… let me know what you need.

All the best

thanks Dr Sassi…i guessed that was the solution but was hoping it could be done with a profile.

I have used an application before (Autodesk Flame) where you could use spline on a histogram that mapped to the full length of an extrusion, and by adding points and moving them above/below the centreline of the graph, you could dynamically alter the profile of the extrude, without having to add lots of individual splines to a loft.

regards

DIY-Extrude

There is, of course, more often than not an option to build what you need.
My training in Flame was a decade ago, and it certainly didn’t contain the 3D parts. It was more about finishing and keying, as well as tracking.

Since you mentioned it, I assume you are used to building things and don’t depend on push-button-options.

Here is an example.

There is a lot more to say about it, but I like to showcase here only what is possible with a few clicks. The profiles can be all over the place, even outside. The Cloner resets the axis to a neutral state by default anyway.

I have used here the Blend option, which allows adjusting the influence of each profile. The more I can see what you need, the more precisely I might be able to help.

Screen-capture and project file.

On the subject of Extrude as default: If the shape of the Extrude can be seen as final, the Correction-Deformer can also be used to pull on points.

ENJOY.

You’re very welcome, Adam; thanks for taking the time.

Part of my doing here is to find individual solutions and creative set ups, so artists of all flavors can express themselves in the best way.

My background is vast and colorful (Film, VFX, MotionGraphics, Art in many forms, including architecture/set-design and others, including any form that uses cameras), so I’m most of the time, quick to understand what one needs.

Of course, that might have limits, as we can’t reproduce Flame, for example, but that is hopefully self-explanatory.

The more I know what you need, the better I can assist you.

Let me know, I’m happy to look into it.

Enjoy.

DIY-Extrude, Z-spline adjustable

P.S.: Here is another option. I focused here on the “Spline-Adjustment” you mentioned.

Project-file and screen-capture.
