Open Street Maps data import?

I saw a Blender tutorial for a plug-in that imports Open Street Maps data and other terrain tools from https://www.openstreetmap.org/

Clicking EXPORT generates an .osm file that may be accessible in Houdini (which I don’t have).

Is there a workflow for importing .osm files into Cinema! If there’s one for Blender, seems like there should be one for Cinema.

Thanks.

Hi fordmar,

The first tip is based on Paul Everett’s development.
He is a well-known developer:
https://www.facebook.com/CinemaPlugins

https://vimeo.com/57982093

I would suggest to check out his work
https://cinemaplugins.com/c4d-plugins/demearth3/
More details here:
https://c4d.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/4000022259

Please note that I do not have this plug-in, as it has a professional price-point, i.e., one just does not buy it to play.

The second is just based on Google search about Illustrator files. I have not tried it, so no guarantee.
Via Illustrator
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Exporting_to_Adobe_Illustrator#:~:text=Commands/ExportSvg.html-,osm2ai.pl,to produce a finished map.

I have not tried this option. So, I went to the site, created an account, and selected a “map-square” while being in “Share” (not export). There I used the PDF download after specifying the area. This opens in Illustrator and needs work. Lots of work. From there, while selected and copied, it can be pasted via CV-ArtSmart directly into Cinema 4D.
The work that a map needs places this workflow certainly outside of anything pro-like. For a single case, it might be useful.

All the best

Thank you! I am constantly bumping up against amazing capabilities that I had no idea existed - only to discover that Cinema has a plug-in for that, and it’s been there for years. So I just wanted to check before I beat my head against the wall for a few days. My initial review of OSM data is it’s a great way to add a massive amount of geometry to a model; how to manage it afterwards is a different problem (i.e.“lots of work!”). You’ve given me a path. Thank you!

I have reviewed DEM Earth before, and as you say, it’s a pro-level tool. I have also used https://terrain.party/ for free elevation data that works pretty well.

You’re very welcome, fordmar, thanks for the reply.

Yes, the amount of plug-ins available is huge, and over the years, I have seen places where they liked to sort this out; sadly, it ends at one point. There are just too make great people doing incredible stuff.

The lots work part was meant for the Illustrator/pdf path. To sort all elements and group them is already a lot of work. To outline the streets, for example, when they come in as path and not as a shape is only one step to mention here. Select tools are helpful in Illustrator, but kind of limited.

Professional plug-ins are often costly, but if used in a client-based environment, they often pay for themself in one or two projects. If not, I would reconsider the use of it. I prefer to find a way to do it with native parts, as far it is possible or making sense to do so.

All the best

P.S.: SVG can be converted via plugin
