Modelling question

Can anybody help or suggest how to model the part highlighted in this wrist watch? I am learning 3D and I am trying to model this watch as practice but I tried and tried and cannot get my head around it! It’s the middle part, which is basically a cube with rounded edges but the side parts (where the watch strap attaches) are problematic to me. (you can find more photos on the watch’s website https://www.bellross.com/mods/BR-05-COLLECTION/#section_1)  thanks.

Hi Beppe,

Please have a look at the sketch below. I had no perpendicular side view, so it is a little bit too thin, but the ideas are the same.

Project file
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/vEvUvMeMLIuK0yeYkb53PUcvcytdHvuhdadcNnU1Av9

I have left a copy fo each step in the file.

Main tools:
Splines and an image as a guide for snapping.
Snapping
Extrude> Edges
Weld Point
Slide [Points]
Cut Edges
Reverse normals for the bottom
… and delete points
Besides move and scale, selections.

I hope that gives you some ideas.

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m happy to look into it.

Cheers

P.S.: here is a little one minute clip, illustrating the most straightforward way I can think of at the moment.

I modeled it from memory. You might use the knife differently. Again, these are just sketches illustrating the process.

Wow that’s great!! Looks quite straightforward when you do it! smile I thought about using the spline but there was something I was doing that didn’t really work, while I can see what you did, now… Great help. Thanks. I’ll give it a go. Beppe

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Beppe, very much appreciated.

Typically the first (or the first few) attempts help to get clear about the whole “logic” of the needed mesh. I often compare it to playing chess, the need to think steps ahead, something like that.

The wristwatch looks like that a 1/4 of the model might be sufficient. Which allows for fewer points in need to be “managed”.

Modeling needs practice, even you think that one step was a mistake, it might be the right one later. In other words, whatever you do, you gain experience.

Let me know if something isn’t working, I’m happy to look into it.

Here is a series that builds up nice the basics. I know you like to have a nice product on end, and modeling a fork seems boring, perhaps. But the tips given here might help.
