Getting Started with Cinema 4D, Part 09: Introduction to the MoGraph Module

Around the 1:00 mark the tutor scales the fish model down which is made up of many items contained within a null. I cannot however get the fish to scale like he does, when I select the Scale Tool and click and drag in the view port area to scale down, it does not scale on the Z or Y, only X, resulting in a pretty big mess. How do I get everything to scale in uniform?

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Thanks

Hi pjrenniedesign,

I assume it is at 0:56. He presses the T key. This is the short cut to get to the Scale tool. In the case of scaling the Objects as a group, one should be in the Model Mode (left upper corner of the interface, the cube icon).

Please, if you have a question, do not open a new thread here manually. There is a help button under each tutorial, use this, to keep things organized. Thanks.

Scaling should be done either in object or model mode. If you are in point mode, for example, and only one point is selected, you will see no results. Since this is more of a guess, I need a little bit more information. Typically the best way is to attach the project file here (zipped), saved in the state where the problem happened.

I will look into your file ASAP

My best wishes, stay safe, stay healthy.

P.S.:

Here is a little screen capture and project file:

Is this working for you?

If you are in Scale Tool mode, there are some essential other settings: Object and Model mode. They are not interchangeable. Both scale the object, but one does so by adjusting the scale parameter, and the other one by moving the points of an object. The best way to understand the difference is that the axis (scale parameter, might distort child objects in animation, this can not happen when only the points have been moved. However, to use now, only the points to scale has a drawback as well. Once all points have the same X, Y, and Z value, one can’t come back later and scale it up again. With the Parameter scale, that is not a problem.

Thanks for you help. It turned out i’d unchecked Y + Z in the panel up top so things were only scaling on the Z. I’m new to this :D

Thanks for the reply, pjrenniedesign.

Yes, it can be a lot to have an eye on everything when you start learning. It will get better over time, naturally.

At the moment you said it, it is so clear, but typically I try avoiding guessing, to not waste your time.

A scene file would have shown that instantly. I’m glad you found it. However, any axis itself can be used, even if locked. Parameters would work as well.

The locking of these axes was at no point part of the tutorial. I assume it must have been done accidentally. Again, thanks for the feedback.
If there is any other question, please attach the scene file. Thanks. I’m happy to look into it.

All the best
