Hi Everyone,

Have a question on some modeling help. I am trying to to model a portafilter espresso machine basket. Please see screen grabs for reference. I have already made the geometry for the tiny holes at the bottom of the basket, but am having a hard time of figuring out how to extend the edges out to a circle? I am using R21 and would really appreciate any tips, suggestions or feedback! Thanks in advance!

Hi 609leininger,

Thanks for the image, I try to go from there. To provide the best information, project files might have an advantage.

I have created a screen capture for you, one minute, no audio. As well as the project file (start and finish):
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/kUJ9fW4b47SOUjo5PpHpfQk57gajcLapHygB9rJaXor

I use the Spherify here, and as long as you keep all on the same level, as in Y=0, then it should work just fine.
I would use the extrude only as small as possible. Any adjustments, while under the influence of the Spherify, can be done quickly. The points stay on the sphere.

(The Iron Tool might help, while only the outline points are selected. Split Edges to get an more even mesh, N-Gons -off)
When everything is done, you can use the Current State To Object function and have a static mesh, to move on with the modeling.

Let me know if there is anything else, I’m happy to look into it.

Enjoy your Sunday

Hi Dr. Sassi,

Thanks so much for the help. Yeah I wish the screenshot quality were better, but the upload requirements really hurt the clarity. How can I upload the project file for you? When I tried to attach, I got an error message that wouldn’t allow the .c4d file type. I am attaching a screenshot of the actual product.

Thanks for that video! I tried something kinda similar without the spherify. I think since I have more points along each edge, it made it more complicated.

Thanks for the additional information, 609leininger.

Is the method that I suggested above not working for you? The number of points might require a few steps more.

As an alternative, you could also use an Extrude with a Circle Spline to produce precisely what you need and then harvest the polygons from it. Delete what is double, and merge both after adjustments.

Files need to be zipped. (Below 4MB)
Besides, for security reasons, I have limited my downloads to DropBox, Amazon, Google, Adobe, and Apple cloud services.

Cheers

Dr. Sassi,

Your spherify method is working really well! I was under the impression, you wanted to look at the project file, to better evaluate if there was a better method. So I won’t send.

Using the spherify, really cleaned things up nicely and is going to work great. Thank you so much!

Perfect, 609leininger, thanks for the feedback.

Just to add something for anyone reading along, here is a little example, using mainly MoGraph and Field-based Selections to model this.

Yes, the holes are too big for a good “crema” of any espresso, but as a demo, it should work just fine wink

My best wishes for your project.

Thanks so much for your help. Here is a screenshot of the finished model, with a little texture and lighting. Very pleased with the results. Thanks again!
