Bee hive sculpture

Hello

I’m trying to figure out how to create a large volume that is made of hexagons.  The idea is to merge a termite nest and a bee hive.  So my initial thinking was to create a shape with volume modelling, but then I’m not sure how to make the volume look like it is made of hexagons.
I don’t want to do just clones in this case, as I’m trying to achieve a fairly organic shape…

Thanks for any thoughts

Alex

Hi Alex,

I need a little bit more input. When I think about the sculptural shapes of a termite-nest, then the hexagonal construction of a bee-hive, the result could be kind of flat layers or build the surface or sculpted organically.

Here are four project files, which I think will shorten the initial discussion.

Let me know what direction you have in mind.

Cheers

P.S. just exploring…

Thanks Sassi, these are great!
The one I like the most is the one with the two subdiv surfaces, because the hive shape is wrapping around the whole shape, that’s closer to what I need.  The only thing is that I would want to be able to equalize the shapes of the hive “holes” a bit more so they don’t look too stretched.  I assume this was a sculpt process and then an inner extrusion of the edges?
Strangely when I try to use the Edge selection tag to see your edge selection nothing appears.  I’m using R20 on this computer so maybe that is why?

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, Alex.

I think the best way would be to follow this tutorial:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/turn_any_object_into_hexagons_with_instant_meshes
One of the two core parts would be after 07:09 [min:sec].

Any other tip is in this screen capture.

… the created file, with some extras:

A perfect hexagon structure will not be anything other than flat. A more freely hexagonal structure can, to some degree, cover an organic object. There might always be a pentagon or scale variations.

Let me know if there is any other question.

Cheers
