I downloaded the current version of Unity and tried to follow this tutorial series but apparently the program has changed in the years since because most of the processes Rick and Donovan use can’t be found. The standard scripts and packages (Character controller package, Mouse look, RigidbodyFPS, etc.) that make everything so easy are not available in the free version I downloaded two days ago.

Either that or I’m going nuts. Which is a possibility after 6 hours of banging around on this.

Are these tutorials no longer applicable?

Thanks.

Hi mford610,

First of all, I’m very sorry that you have run into a problem like that. Not what anyone here likes to have you to experience at all. SORRY.

Please let me know where your problems are, and which tutorial is related to that step:

• What procedure doesn’t lead to the wanted results?

• Which CV script/plugin isn’t working?

• Which export options have you used?

• Have you allowed Unity to update the content if asked to…?

• What is the message in the Unity Console about the problem? API Errors, Script Compilation Errors, FBX errors, etc. ?

I encountered the following problems:

The provided final file from Rick will not open in any Unity version of this year. I downloaded the latest, but also tried several other versions (e.g., 5. ; 2018)
Currently, the file from Part 16 shows trouble downloading here. I used a download from a few years ago.

The files, while recognized, needed an update. Content loads, but after the Play button was used, it shows several problems in the Unity Console.

You chose to open a post in the Tutorials Forum manually. The admin team asked to use only the Help Button, so things stay organized.

I will leave this here in the Q&A for a moment, then I think it would be best to go to the Cineversity Tutorial suggestion, kind of a request to update the series and any part related to this. There are just too many tutorials that could fit into your description, “Unity Game Development with Cinema 4D with Rick Barrett and Quickstart in Unity with Donovan Keith”. At least I counted 22, plus seven from others and presentations.

I have no idea at the moment if the next step should be to move this thread to the Tutorial Suggestion (Update of content) or Content loading Problems (Files), which means to the Cineversity Site Issues, Etc. Your question is kind of broad.

All the best

Specifically:

Cinema 4D to Unity to Oculus Rift Quickstart by Donovan Keith

At 1:56 he sets up the Unity 3D project, he goes to “Standard Assets” and adds the “Characters” asset. When I go to this same menu in my version of Unity, it’s blank - no standard assets inside. So should I have loaded my copy of Unity with assets at some point?

At 5:18 he loads in his player character, which is identified as a RigidbodyFPS asset. I don’t have that in my copy of Unity. However, I found a “load presets” command somewhere in Unity that offers preset assets to upload, but the RigidbodyFPS is not listed.

In Barrett Part 4: Setting up a Unity Project, Rick adds the Character Controller.unitypackage. This is also missing from my interface.

So I am not able to complete what appears to be a very simple operation in either of these tutorials. So far as I can tell I followed the instructions for installing Unity to the letter, and it appears to work fine - so far as I would know, anyway. It just has none of the assets Donovan and Rick are using in their tutorials.

And so I am stuck.

Reference JPGs attached.

Thanks a lot for your efforts, mford610.

I tested a demo scene from Unity in the current version of Unity (MAC), and all works fine with my installation.

However, at the moment I follow any of the mentioned tutorials, I ran into problems.  I used the CV_Smart Exporter for Farmer Scene.

I installed the Unity Hub, as suggested from, then followed all the steps of the given tutorials, but the list of problems in the Console kept to be very long. While trying to get anything loaded, I was prompted to load a Mono-viewer. At this point, I decided that all these steps need to be evaluated, and an updated version of the tutorials needs to be done.

I will move this thread to the Tutorial Request Forum.

Sorry, but this is the first time in over 13 years here that I think here is certainly a short run-down for the workflow needed.

Sorry again for such trouble.

Cheers

The image below shows the number of problems I get while importing the given project files. I think that indicates a need to revisited this series.

Well, oddly, that makes me feel much better. If you were also stumped by the complications, then maybe I’m not as bassackward as I thought.

Thank you very much, mford610, for your patience.

I think the request needs to be a single tutorial which uses the latest version of Unity (of course) and builds up on the Farmer scene.

For now:
I have used here only default export options and used the latest Unity release as of today. I hope this short run-down helps a little bit.

If I export the scene via default FBX (Normals checked, I get no problems reported from the Console. Perhaps, I missed something before. Here is all I was able to find about this theme in the Unity Manual.

https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/HOWTO-ImportObjectsFrom3DApps.html#Cinema4D

The newest information is in this presentation:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/siggraph_2018_rewind_al_heck_jon_weinberger_create_game_art_unity_using_c4d

If you explore it further, please use the Help button below each tutorial clip, and with a specific question, I can check this out. A general question about a whole group, with several series, will overwhelm anyone. It is a day worth of watching, not to say, exploring it practically.

Again, thanks for your patience in that matter. I will certainly invest some time this month on it.

Cheers
