Magnetic waves

Hello

I’m looking for a way to create animated magnetic waves as you see in some planetary renderings.

See here (bottom part of the image)
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c8/80/6a/c8806a84f5e603668d6e0461fdb7bff4.jpg
and here
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/a0/77/31/a0773162b5a2d8f1d14ce0aebf4edeba.jpg

There is also a nice animated example here
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/781937554035438097/

I was thinking of ways of doing this, and it seems like a merging of splines, but not sure how to create such an organic animation….

Thanks for any pointers!

Hi Alex,

There are certainly many ways to do it. Please have a look here:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/qEUHtphRFlXnRHRabtyh4ua3ja2YXwU54MMLcPganKm

The Volume Builder allows for a lot of variety, subtract, Union, Smoothing, etc.

The gradient can be doubled (multiple times) and the spheres can be moved:

I have checked only the Pinterest link, I’m not aware of how secure i.pinimg is.

All the best

Thanks Sassi, that’s a great solution!
This image in particular (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c8/80/6a/c8806a84f5e603668d6e0461fdb7bff4.jpg) - it is safe to click, it is just a pinterest link that I opened in it’s own browser window to avoid the Pinterest UI - is something I’m trying to get, more elongated shapes.
Maybe if play with the spheres?  What I’m curious about is the combination of more “spear” like shapes in the middle and more circular ones on top.

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

I read more and more that even “safe” government accounts are hacked and put under ransomware, I’m not risking lightly to click on anything thing. Yes, Pinterest is known, so is Adobe, and was hacked twice so far.
Sorry, if my wish for safety causes any extra work. Hence why I’m happy to set up upload links at any time. (Yes, dropbox can be hacked as well, but where to stop?). Anyway, I opened it on a different computer, not where I have all my NDA stuff sitting.

Since I assume we have covered the blue lines, the yellow lines are in question. That might be a case for Field Forces. I will have a look at it. When I find a workable solution, I will post it here.

Cheers

Thanks for that, Alex.

Thanks for understanding. I might consider using my iPad for the images. I guess everyone likes keeps his/her production machine safe. Who wouldn’t? But, yes, if you have used it a lot, I can understand that you trust this. Where to draw a line, while I get over the year, so many new URLs to click on?

Anyway, how about the idea of fields? (post #4) Did you have had a minute to open the file?
… or this one

Hello Sassi

This is really nice!  Lots of control with the splines and field forces.  I’m just learning about Field forces but it seems really straightforward and flexible.
I’m going to play around and see what I find.  Thank you so much for the pointers!

Sounds good, thanks, Alex.

This is such a large and versatile Field (pun intended).

Magnetic fields are certainly an excellent way to explore these.

In fact, I’m exploring it at this moment for magnetic fields and try to find simplified “rules” to give it a good start.

I hope I have later on.

Thanks again for the reply.

Cheers

P.S.:

Not that I try to go deep here into X-Particles, but here is a little sketch.

P.S.2.:

Another take on the “blue waves”.

Move the time slider to see the effect. It is based on a simple Pose Morph. Which is then applied with a Pose-Deformer, while cloned, and adjusted with a Linear Field.
The texture is a simple Fresnel, which is limited by a second material (via Add Material)

It is a little bit weird to animate, as the Linear Field and the Cloner need to get in counter motion to each other.

Screen-shot, Project-file:

Easier to animate, but less versatile, making it editable:

Goodnight. wink

… and another one:

I can’t think at the moment of anything simpler than that.

Enjoy.

Wow, that’s a super interesting approach!  Really good.
I had no idea you could use a morph tag inside a morph deformer!
How did you create arc_a and arc_b with the same number of points?  By making two versions of the arc spline generator?

Thank you!

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Alex.

My approach to mirror it, while stretched, is pretty simple. I place a “minus” (-) into the scale. To get rid of the scale, I put it under an empty Spline and merge it. The Merge typically takes the settings from the Parent, so the scale, intermediate points, etc. are set again. Thee scale 3 is gone.

I have captured the whole process, including the Pose Morph here: (this can be downloaded for a better viewing experience)

Here is the file, with some additional ideas.

Let me know if there is any other question.

Watched the video, amazing technique…I’m definitely going to use this in conjunction with the volume approach, I think I can really get what I need from this.

Thanks again!
