ideas on how to create mud splatter

Hi All!!  i have a client asking for a ball of mud ( semi liquid ) to be thrown at the camera.  the ball is to splatter against the screen, and then drip off of it.  Im not so much worried about the dripping off, as i am about the splatter.  I played around with soft body dinamics dropping a sphere against a plane, but the sphere keeps its circular shape and never really becomes a splatter.  any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!

On the topic of soft bodies, you could explore using vertex maps to add some variation to the effect of the soft bodies effects on the object.
This would allow for some areas to stretch more than others and could lead to an irregular surface rather than circular like you are currently getting.

Now that sounds like fun so I might just go and try it myself now.

As for other ideas, you could go as simple as the melt deformer.
