Rounding edges on a cutout

I have an extruded shape that has a bunch of windows cut out. These were done using extrude objects and a boole, then used C to make editable and connect+delete to reduce it all down to a single object.

I want to give the inner edge of the window a rounded appearance but cannot figure out how to do this.
First thing i tried was selecting the inner edge using Loop select, then looking for a Chamfer - but its greyed out
Then i tried the Bevel tool, but that seemed to behave more like an Extrude, pulling up the edge vertically.

I tried a subdivision surface but that failed as well - i am sure it used to be fairly straightforward to do this but i am completely lost !
help!!!

Hi lightningad,

Please have a look here:

As usual, I prefer to get the project file in question to spot problems that images do not show. I hope I was able to recreate your setup.

Thanks Dr Sassi…..thats exactly how i wanted it to look!!

I had forgotten all about those deformers - but when i apply one to my own shape, nothing happens. I made sure to select a loop of edges and added those to the deformers selection setting.

I assume i must have done something wrong when using the Boole object to create the shape prior to using the make editable then Connect+Delete commands.

regards
Adam

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the file; a file tells me what is going on. grin

Your object is based on several objects, not connected.

Run the Mesh> Remove> Optimize* (go to the cogwheel and set the tolerance to 0.1)

Now recheck the Bevel Deformer.

brilliant!
how can you tell the objects are not connected?  I did use the connect and delete function several times. I’ll definitely start to use the mesh optimize you mentioned

thanks for all your help

Hi Adam,

You’re very welcome.

The simplest way to see if an object is connected (on a point level) is to use a Subdivision Surface. You will see perhaps that in some areas, holes appear. A clear sign that edges do not use the same points.

If you use the Connect and Delete Function, please note that it has no Optimize (like Weld) options. It just places all parts in one “Container”.

When points are located in the same position, and edges are using one or the other, Optimize works. Sometimes these points are not exactly “on top of each other”, then the Tolerance needs to be adjusted. But there is a danger if the mesh has points working well but closer to each other.
There, a large tolerance might destroy parts of a mesh. For that, an option is given to handle only selected parts.

You’re very welcome, Adam.

Yes, the naming of that tool is misleading; I can see that.

Perhaps time to bring Optimize as a function into that.
