Weight Mirror on Toon Rig

I’m trying to mirror weights on a toon rig and it simply doesn’t work. I’m attaching the file so it’s better to understand. My struggle is with the legs geometry. I’d really appreciate if I can get any solution because I’m not sure if this is something that I did wrong on my side or if it’s a bug on C4D. I’m using the latest version.

Edit: I’m linking the file here because I can’t upload it to the forum: https://www.dropbox.com/s/w4f0leuafe2hp64/ted_lasso_V04.c4d?dl=0

Thanks.

Hi laurasirco,

Thanks for the file and for using dropbox.

I found a character that has missing elements, like the foot controller, Pole controller, etc.

Any reason for deleting parts of it?

I assume you have checked out this series

If a technique is unclear, set up a simple version and go from there.

I would not mirror any weights before the values add not up to 100% (Normalized.) Any value below or above will weirdly move the character.

Here is a simplified setup, so you can check out how to mirror that. The Toon rig is not ideal for getting savvy with that.

My best wishes

Hi Dr. Sassi,

It’s weird because I haven’t deleted anything, it’s just that one leg is in FK and the other one in IK.

However, I found help from Sebastian himself. But maybe it has to do with the normalized weights, I was in auto normalize so I don’t understand why it wasn’t normalizing the weights automatially. I was also hitting the normalize button and it wasn’t working.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, laurasirco.

Great that you got help from Sebastian.

It would not have occurred to me to set things to FK and the other to IK while mirroring the weight. I saw the values in the Weight Editor, and yes, this impression led me to assume that this was a character that had been messed around. This leads to a different suggestion from my side, how to move on. A simple file was my hope to get this cleared.

All of that led me to get first the Mirror Weigh workflow established.

From my point of view, I would have made the character first editable.
For the Legs, use the Weight Tag, and for me, the heat map worked.

I’m glad you have contact with Sebastian, so you are in good hands.

All the best
