Geometry Restrictions on Effectors?

Hello all. Does anyone know if there is a way to limit an effector’s transformation to a selected part of polygon within a cloner?

I have a sphere hanging from the end of a “cord” (cylinder). That object is a single polygon inside of a cloner. I want to add an effector (in this case a shader) to the cloner to adjust the hanging heights of the spheres. The topmost edge of the “cord” cannot move, so just moving everything on the -Y doesn’t work. I want to just scale-Y the “cord” (cylinder) but leave the sphere unchanged. Is this possible?

I seem to be unable to upload an image that better illustrates my question.

Hi rfisher131,

Is this helping?

Cloner set to: Object> Clones> Blend
Effector set to: Parameter> Modify Clone

All the best

This 100% works, thank you! Do you know of any other ways that this same effect could be achieved — modifying the one object, vs blending between two?

My “spheres” are actually not spheres — they have a little more geometry than a sphere, but not much — and I have a lot of them that I am planning to animate in the shader. My viewport is struggling.

Thanks for the feedback, rfisher131,

When the “main object” is an object with many polygons, I would split this into two setups.
Example

You can replace the Sphere (named “Dummy”) with your model.
The second Cloner is set to Multi Instances, which means it shouldn’t create significant stress in your system.
The Cylinder has a single Polygon with a Selection tag. That is the one used to place the object.
I used a null as a parent; as the object axis of your object is unknown to me, adjust the position under the Null accordingly.

As an alternative, if not many different steps among all Clones are needed, you could produce those and then use the sort option in a similar way. In that way, the system can also take advantage of the Multi Instances.

Cheers
