Redshift ACES AOV

Hi Everyone!
Couple of questions on AOV rendering in redshift.

1.  If i’m rendering out AOVs with Redshift ACES, and the beauty pass looks great, but the Aov’s have a ton of noise. I have Denoise checked for in the Advanced > Denoise tab.  However, the AOV’s have a lot of noise. Do i need to check “DENOISE” on every one of those AOVs, like specular and/or reflections?

2.  Is it possible to render out just ONE Aov w/o the beauty pass?  For ex: I’ve rendered out everything, and i’ve got one AOV, i.e Reflections, that is horribly noisy (referenced above), or, I’ve forgotten to render a puzzlemat, and i just need to render ONE pass quickly.  I’m assuming direct, but it seems like it doesnt work if I have no passes rendering in ‘save’ rendering settings.

Thanks!

Hi Sharon Palkowetz,

The first thing that comes to mind is: Why is there noise? Is there a way to lower it?

Noise reduction is never an excellent idea, as where the noise was can’t be fine detail. Avoiding noise should be the first consideration.

Yes, I know, searching for the noise source cost time, render with different settings and comparing, cost time. But de-noising also costs time, so where is the sweet spot? Perhaps Darrin’s video can answer that.
Since I have no project file:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/remove_secondary_ray_noise_in_redshift

Besides, this might help as well:
https://help.maxon.net/c4d/s26/en-us/Default.htm#_REDSHIFT_/html/AOV+Tutorial.html#AOVTutorial-NoiseInTheAOVs

When you go into the Cinema 4D render settings, you can set up Render Settings… (Button in the left lower corner) New Child. This allows you to switch off all other AOVs you don’t need.

Some AOVs, like Cryptomatte, are based on “deep data, ” meaning they are rendered after all others are calculated.

If you need to have some de-noised, the check box needs to be on for the specific AOV (Some are grayed out). The De-noise AOVs in the Render-Settings is a switch that enables all selected AOVs to be de-noise. You will notice that the render-time changes with each decision.

If you render into the Picture Viewer, you can see what happens (processing… ) and how long each AOV takes.
There is also a Denoise AOV in the Rendershift 3D RenderView Display> General. This is also based on which AOV has been checked.

All the best

Thanks Dr. S.
Is there a way to just render ONE AOV, like when i forget to render out a puzzle mat, or only need to render out a reflections AOV (maybe i forgot to add it in when i was setting my initial render).

I know in the standard renderer, if i needed a matte, i could go through some steps to just render out a matte. It was a bit lengthy, but it could be done, instead of having to rerender the entire batch. Even just a beauty pass set to a jpg and a reflections AOV, for ex, can take a bit of time.

Thanks for your speedy reponses!

Hi Sharon,

I thought I had answered this: But let’s try again, no problem. grin

I assume you don’t like changing the project’s render settings. So I suggested this:

“When you go into the Cinema 4D render settings, you can set up new Render Settings…
(Button in the left lower corner)
New Child. This allows you to switch off all other AOVs you don’t need. Without changing your main settings.”

Now you can deselect all AOVs you don’t like to have (while being in the Child settings)

A beauty pass will be rendered but not saved. I can’t find any information to prevent this.

Perhaps let me share a few tips to speed up that workflow.

In the Redshift Render Setting> System> Legacy, use the material Overwrite.
(Legacy, as the Material Overwrite has replaced it:)
https://vimeo.com/520896890
Here I would use a material that is black and has no reflections (weight = 0)

Secondly, I would switch off the Global Illumination.

Perhaps switch off all lights (Using Takes or Layer might help to manage this).

Now the Puzzlematte should render quickly.

All the best

I’m sorry Dr. S, i didn’t understand that in your first response. Thank you for being patient and explaining it to me again.
I really appreciate that. I’ll try that and see if it works.
Thank you again!

You’re welcome, Sharon; you’re always such a great supporter during the trainings-shows, so please don’t worry.

No patience needed: That you get it working is the target.

Enjoy your weekend
