Random Rotation Spin Speed for Cloner

I’m working in R24, and I have a project where I’m trying to create random rotation speeds for cloner objects of an emitter.

I’m creating spin by using a Time Effector, but when I try and add a Random Effector with a Weight Transform value in order to randomize the strength of the Time Effector, I can’t get it to work.

I saw the technique described here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Cinema4D/comments/ch4908/random_rotation_always_looks_unnatural/euqdmf0/

And I watched Noseman’s tutorial here:
https://youtu.be/3jA4LavYESA

I can’t seem to figure it out.

Here’s a project file:

Nevermind, I found this video explaining how to use the Weight Transform function in newer versions of C4D:

I had to add the Cloner to the Time Effector’s falloff list 👍

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the file and for using Google drive.

1)
If it can be done with fields, I would do it.

Example

If MG Weight is mandatory: My suggestion would be to use a Matrix Object.

To drag the Cloner into a field that affects the same Cloner could produce a problem at one point. It sounds like set up for a “feedback loop”.

Besides, thinking of priorities, top to bottom, to take information and go up again then down, sounds not healthy.

2)
The idea of MG-Weight back in the days was also based on the order in which the Effectors were positioned in the Cloner list. With the Cloner to fields and back to the Cloner, this is more complex.
Since you have a source (emitter) for the Cloner, I would take that directly to the Matrix and place the Weight from the random into the Matrix.

In this way, you can easily manage anything.

3)
Much simpler would be of course to use the Weight Tag, and use that random-field inside of it. Then use this Tag inside of your Effector Field.

However, if that works for you, as you mentioned, that might be fine.

All the best

Ah, yes ok, so many ways to skin a cat smile

I tried using a Random Field at one point, but I thought it could only do a static field causing the rotation from the Time Effector to constantly change as the clones moved through it. I see now, I didn’t change the Random Mode from ‘Noise’ to ‘Random’.

I think the first method makes the most sense to use. I appreciate you sharing the other techniques, great learning opportunity. Thanks!

Hi J.!

If possible, I like to share options, as everyone has a different idea of how to work, and I’m happy to support that.

Most of the time, the missing thing is to ask about the “Internal Information Flow”. When something gets something wink

Have a great evening
