Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you could recommend a tutorial to understand the proper way to set up a project to work within ACES
(R25/Redshift to After Effects).
I unfortunately didnt find any newer ones to understand that workflow with the new Redshift defaults.

Thanks in advance smile

Hi Remo_G,

Thanks to Stu, we have had a linear workflow for a decade in AfterEffects. With that, ACES is possible. Since he loves to make us all happy with helpful information (I mean it as I say it here), please have a look here:
https://prolost.com
Linear Light, Gamma, and ACES, June 22, 2021

When you scroll down After Effects is discussed.

I hope that helps, and thanks for the pointer; I could only find newer tutorials about ACES with DaVinci. I will address this.

A quick-start guide for VFX is here: (For anyone reading along)
https://community.acescentral.com/t/getting-started-with-aces/1372

You are certainly aware of this part of the documentation:

Hi Dr. Sassi,
thanks a lot. The articles look promising grin

And thanks as well for adressing the issue and need for a (as quick as possible) tutorial about the topic.

A flythrough what boxes need to be checked in RS/R25 as well as where to find the OpenColor IO v2.0 plugin for AE and how to properly use it to achieve the same image as shown in the RS RenderView/C4D PictureViewer would be so valuable.

It can get a little overwhelming with all the different options to change the tone mapping and/or gamma curve etc. (Color Management Settings in AE; Post Effects/Luts in RS; etc…).

Since we have checked ACES as default now (wich is awesome grin), it would be really helpful, how to properly make use in a 32bit/16bit float AE project of it.

Thanks so much and really looking forward to it grin

All the best,
R.

Hi Remo_G.,

Thanks you. Yes, I will try to get a short and proper material for this, but I’m not in the power to just order it!

In a nutshell, ACES was developed to mix all cameras used during filmmaking without caring what camera produces what. Since its first announcement, I followed it and tried to create awareness here, as the misuse of LUTs and other weird treatment of renderings seemed to have gone in the wrong direction.

The core idea: Each camera has been profiled to put, e.g., a GoPro into the mix, while a RED or an ARRI camera is in the same pool. At the same time, the camera data after that point should make no difference. Of course, the limitations in dynamic range or tonal fidelity can’t be overcome with this. But the space in which all of that happens is larger than any current camera can produce. Certainly larger than the human eye can capture. As usual, the pipeline must be bigger than the results. Not the other way around. Like some people, even today produces in 8bit.ch!

For CG, it is usually the ACEScg or perhaps the ACEScc (color correction); however, the profiles assume that the values are fine and an 18% gray value (0,18) or, as some people call it a mid-gray or 50%, while all others are linear. With that, the transfer functions will work.

Now one can mix a match without effort. Many options for the target device (Scree, Film-printing, Projector, etc.) are given when all is done.

After your questions, I searched what Adobe offers so far, as Adobe should answer the question for AfterEffects and Premiere. Maybe it is more hidden than I thought, but I couldn’t find a thing.

Max has done a lot of DaVinci material about ACES, which explains the process, but yes, a short and proper AfterEffects session should be available.

Hi Remo_G,

You’re welcome.

(If I got it right, it was one of those Chicken/Egg moments.)

Anyway, I hope the waiting is worth it!

Cheers
