Managing large models in the viewport

I have a large model with several components that originated as CAD imports. Meaning every bolt and screw is included. I’ve tried all the standard operations to streamline processing, like optimizing, polygon reduction, and reducing the level of detail. I hide all the objects except the ones I need for the particular operation. Even so, it’s quite draggy. Is there a way to “turn off” an object in the object manager so Cinema really does ignore it until it’s needed?

Hi fordmar,

That would be done in the Layer Browser.

All the best

So turning off a layer removes the object from consideration by the processor? i.e. the program behaves as if it weren’t there?
I set up layers as suggested, and turning layers on and off does help - to an extent. When a layer is off the amount of drag is reduced, but not eliminated. (these are big models)
Would XREF be more efficient? Or does an XREF have to be calculated the same as if it were present in the flesh (so to speak)?

Hi fordmar,

Each scene is different. A general question could quickly fill a book, cover all cases, and be precise enough to kill vital features that don’t require much power.

I have no idea how your files are created. Sometimes there are many Instances at work, which means the Generator needs to be off if that is the problem. See image.
CAD files typically have fewer of the other options, but I leave it to you to explore with no idea about the file.

Could it be that textures were loaded, and they slow down the CPU? Perhaps use the options of the editor view to sort some bottlenecks—just a thought.

Let me know if I should look into something. I’m happy to do so.

Cheers

I have many sweeps and extrudes. So turning off Generators might help. Would having many (many) clones add to the struggle?

Thanks for the update, fordmar.

It depends, with Multiple instances not so much. It always depends.

It is often possible to have a second “child” under the Cloner as a proxy/low-res” and use a Sort/Modify Clone set up as a complete res/Proxy switch with Cloners.
As usual, general questions are difficult to answer if an individual scene needs to be optimized.

All the best

oops! My generator comment should have gone here :(

“Turning off Generators in layers makes a HUGE difference. The dragginess is reduced in accord with how many Generators are turned off. When all are off, things spin around like a bird - which it wasn’t doing before. So that one little switch is speeding things up enormously.”

You’ve mentioned that we need to keep topics separate, so I had two threads going at once. Which makes my head spin (just a little).

Hi fordmar,

I’m glad you get some speed back. I know only too well how de-motivational it is to work on slowed-down machines.

Have a great day
