Hi openmindedcomedy,
This is a general question, and the amount of changes or rigging options a character might have–makes me really feel uncomfortable to answer in general. For example, is there anything XPresso with positions in it or a PoseMorph with various settings?
Having said that, use a copy of the suggested steps and test carefully.
A standard would be to set the whole character to its Binding Pose.
Then disable all Skin Objects. Some have one, but often I see many.
Scale down the Polygon object in model mode, so the scale of the objects stays at 1. Note, any step that scales to zero (=all points have the same X, Y, Z value, can’t be fixed later on, please be careful) Typically anything else with character, pretty much always Object mode!
So, when the rig and the polygon have a matching scale and the size you have targeted, use the Weight tags and set the Binding Pose.
Now switch back on the Skin objects.
Check all parts carefully.
Again, any expression or python code that uses position will screw this up; hence, test this on a copy!
There is no one tip for all possible options.
All the best
