A Workflow For UV Unwrapping Symmetrical Character Head

Hi Dr. Sassi,

If it is okay with you, could I see a screencapture of you UV unwrapping a symmetrical character head? I was amazed at how you have this symmetrical UV of this character’s head in this post: https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/4700/

I tried doing it with UV relax and assigning different points as “pins”, but I can’t get that symmetrical look correctly
Thank you so much

Hi openmindedcomedy,

If you have just the initial unwrapping in mind (not the symmetry painting:

Please note that the frontal project is vertical aligned (edges and Y-axis); the viewing angle will determine the result! Hence why I show it a few times.
Project file, before and after

I was unsure if you needed the symmetry paint, as you pointed to the thread with that specific question, or how to align a mesh.

Here are two screen captures.

Besides that, I would highly recommend going through Thanassis’ series about UV.

and

Yes, they are not directly for organic shapes, but the certainty you gain with those might be worth the time.

Does this answer your question? If not, please provide a scene file (Dropbox, Amazon, Adobe, Apple, Google, Wetransfer, please do not shorten the URL, thanks. I can also provide an upload link.)

Enjoy your weekend

The first screen capture answered my question. Thank you so much! I guess that workflow just automatically symmetrize UV. This is the exact workflow that I do, probably I just forget that it symmetrize automatically because my instinct instantly goes to fixing the UV distortions. Do you have a way to fix distortions while maintaining the symmetry of the UV? (Either by using some sort of command/commands or like a tool like UV Magnet Tool)

I think I’ve already watched that course like a few months ago (I think that’s where I learned the Project > Relax workflow). I’ll try to re-watch it again some other time

Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback, openmindedcomedy.

There is a Magnet Tool:
https://help.maxon.net/c4d/s24/en-us/Default.htm#html/11715.html#PLUGIN_CMD_17040

However:
The key is to get the Frontal Project as good as possible from the start. If you need that precision, use a camera set to the exact center of the mesh, then pull it back to frame the object (I guess pulling the z-axis should be the right one in most cases).
(Set UVW from Projection is sometimes worth a try, before “relaxing”.)

Since I try to find always new ways, let me share this one with you:

Go into the UV layout and use the PoseMorph slider.
(Works as well with Magnet-Tool created poses.) grin

All the best
