Object is too angular/crisp

Hi,
is it possible to smoothen, blur or add segments to objects?

The object was made editable („c“), then modeling & „Subdivision Surface“.
Now it’s too angular/crisp, eg roundings.

Can I change that? Maybe when rendering?

Thank you in advance & Cheers smile

Hi studio,

Would you mind sharing a scene file?

General questions usually do not lead to a specific solution.
General answer: If you like to soften polygon objects, use the Volume object.

When it is too “sharp” after SDS, typically less elements around the edges are needed.

I need to see what you have done. If there is something that comes to mind, I will share it.

I can send an upload link (if PM is enabled), or please use a zip file to attach it here directly (max. 4MB)
Cloud services, for security reasons, I open only the full URL (not shortened) from Dropbox, Amazon, Google, Wetransfer, Apple, or Amazon.

Cheers

When I try to send a PM to you.
One or more of the Screen Names submitted were invalid.
You have surpassed the Private Message sending limit for a 24 hour period.
The inboxes for the following members are currently full, and to send this message you must remove them from your Recipients or CC fields: studio

Anyway, I don’t use PMs for discussions, typically just to exchange upload links. I believe deeply in the forum.

I will leave this link here for a short moment.

—no file received—please no images, just project files!

All I can see is that the mesh is too rough.

Cheers

Studio,

Images can’t tell me the whole story. In pretty much all cases, project files, reduced to the problem perhaps, will solve the question!

What I can see is that the mesh has too little subdivision. However, what the Editor’s view shows and the rendering in the Picture Viewer can be quite different. You have two values in the SubdivisionSurface interface.

This will have no need for the Volume object, from what I can see.

Cheers

Hi Studio,

Sorry, as I mentioned, I do not do discussions via PM. It excludes everyone else here, which means the idea to run a forum is canceled.

You have sent a link with a German Illustrator path explanation (don’t worry, I speak German), which would be a Spline in Cinema 4D. Those can work with interpolations between or among points.

Edges of objects in Cinema 4D are always straight. No exception. The subdivision surface creates new points, like with the interpolated Splines, and connects those with straight edges until you get more polygons.

The appearance of roundness is then given with the Phong Tag, which is an idea of smoothness, but not in terms of the underlying geometry. The Silhouette of the object will show that. There is, however, a sweet spot, where subdivision allows the Silhouette of the object to show up smooth, without going too dense. Always depended on how close the camera is and the given rendered resolution.

There are applications, primarily in engineering, which create these surfaces based on mathematical definitions (NURBS). However, when it gets exported into a polygon object, this smoothness depends on the given parameters.

In Cinema 4D, the SDS is not a full NURBS (non-uniform-rational B-spline) surface.
