making an object deform to another mesh dynamically.

Hello, I have an object that is controlled by an Xpresso tag and user data. Basically the knob turns and a cylinder extends out of the object.  I would like for this extended object to be deformed “similar to path deform” as it passes into another object. (I’ve put up the scene’s link to make it clearer LOL!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thx!

Marc.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the file and for using Dropbox.

Please have a look at the three files below:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/G7YnzDB3J9GCOel8GzljHTst3ycdp8nbKv4NqmF7XJS

File 01 is based on three bend deformers. Here the key is to keep the sequence correct. If you change the hierarchy, it will fall apart.
The setup is typically after the first deformer is set, you get the new direction of the object, and with the send, you know where to place the third.

File 11 is based on the Spline Wrap. The key here is the Bounding Box, it should be Fixed, so any change of the object inside the Bounding Box is not changing anything else. Note that I left it on Fit Spline. Perhaps Keep Length is more to your liking and typically suggested, but with a fixed Bounding Box, that might be not really that important, as long as the bounding box is close to the size of the Spline. You will see and make the call what fits best.
File 12 is an update of 11 and uses only one Spline Wrap, while the Keep Length is set here.

All the best

So helpful, once again!! thank you so much for the time you take to help me out!! so much appreciated!

So I see in you example, the reason why the spline doesn’t move with the animated cylinder is how you place them in the hierarchy. Brillant! I had tried the spline one, but since I had put the spline wrap under my cylinder, the spline was moving with it!

All 3 examples work perfectly! now it’s to choose which one to use lol! smile

thanks again!

cheers!

Thanks for the reply, Marc.

I could even think to set the animation with the Spline Warp parameters.
Based on adjustability, I would use file 12. But I assume that was just a demo file from you, and I might miss some details from the full setup.

My best wishes for your project.

Good day Dr. Sassi! So just when I thought I had it figured out, I don’t lol!!

so the problem is still present. There are two parts to this animation. 1. the “gun” is actually a device that moves, rotates, then the long cylinder is the camera that extends… the beige opened tube, is the sinus canal (which doesn’t move) . So if the “gun” is static, then yes the camera as it extends, moves according to the path, but if the whole gun is moved or rotated then the path is “stuck” .

(I’ve included the first scene you made)

thx!

Ah!!! I found the trick ... or at least one that works,

https://www.dropbox.com/t/fXC0HnRmCOcAXxBP

Basically what I did is use the target tag to clamp the bend object to my non-moving one. Even though they move around (not sure how to fix that) the desired result is there.

cheers!

Hi Marc,

I have to check your last file after this post.

Here is the way I would do it.
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/fQxUjF0fuuC5lXHcENLvlQaPGINKCx8uOjayqhNLci9

The camera is not deformed before it reaches the entry point, then it moves out.

In other words, at the moment the instrument explores the canal, both parts typically stop moving. I do not believe that having such a thing in one’s nose will allow for the idea to start moving.

All the best

Ah. Yes, the psr works better than the clamp!

Thx!
