Why can’t I bend an extruded Illustrator spline?

I’m looking for any assistance I can get around a really basic question.

I have imported a vector file from Adobe Illustrator. I have extruded the spline, changed the Intermediate Points to Subdivided, gone into Caps in the Extrude effector and changed Caps Type to Regular Grid. And, Now I am trying apply a Bend effector to the shape.

It will only let me bend the shape along the extruded sides. I cannot bend the Caps side of my object. It’s maddening. I have spent hours trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve watched 20 videos and in all the demos I’m watching it works. What am I doing wrong?

Hi sryan0603,

The parameter that you need to adjust is

Extrude: Attribute Manager> Object> Subdivision

As with polygon-edges, the generated segment’s edges can’t be bend. To create this change, you need more edges instead of, e.g., one. Edges are between points, and those points get moved by deformers. So, if something has points, it normally can be deformed.

Is that working for you?

BTW, I have moved your question: The Tutorial Forum is for questions directly related to a tutorial only. If there is a question about a tutorial, then a new thread should only be opened with the tutorial’s Help button. This sets the headline (which should not be changed) and helps others to find things.

All the best

Thanks for the quick reply. I am able to bend the extruded sides. What I really want to do is bend the circle around something else. So, bend the Cap sides of the extruded object, not the extruded sides. If that doesn’t make sense I can try to add a visual reference.

Hi sryan0603,

Yes, more data would be nice, as bending something around is not super clear. In the example above, the caps were included in the bend. I have added a scene-file with a larger cpas to that post.

How about this one here:

Or this

Perhaps the Extrude is otherwise not the way to go, but I will wait with this assumption until I get clear data.
If you need an upload link, let me know. (DropBox, Amazon, Adobe, Apple, Wetransfer, Google cloud services are the only ones I touch, not shortened URL).

Cheers
