Hard Surface Modeling UV Unwrapping: Unwrapping the Small Parts

Hi! I can’t seem to get the “Start Interactive Mapping” to reveal the UVs in the UV editor as is shown in the final chapter of “Hard Surface Modeling UV Unwrapping: Unwrapping the small parts”. I am in the dark as to what I am doing wrong as I have attempted to repeat the process several times from scratch. I am hoping you can point me in the right direction.

Thank you so much for time,
Scott Lange

I have move a post.
Please always use the help button from the tutorial the question is related to. Thanks. Otherwise no one will find what is needed anymore.

Hi Scott Lange,

This seems to be a problem in R23.008. If you like me to look into it anyway:

Would you please share your project file (attached here as zip).
I can send you an upload link if needed.

If you use any cloud services, please only Dropbox, Amazon, Apple, Adobe, Wetransfer, or Google. Thanks.

I will have a look into your file ASAP.

Cheers

Thanks for the file, Scott.

Very nice of you to use Google, and for the effort to put this together.

I can reproduce it with your file as well, and it is the version that has this problem.

Workaround.

Interactive Mapping is a comfortable way to do it. Besides that, it can be done manually.

Personally, I prefer it manually anyway, and the only extra step you have to do is to select all polygons that should be affected, then assign it to the UV tag. (No clicking on Start/Stop Interactive Mapping needed!)

Be careful if you have more UV tags on the specific object. A Material tag (UVW mapping selected) always uses the UVW map directly to its right in the Object Manager

I hope that helps until the fix for the problem is available.

All the best

Thank you so much, Dr. Sassi for your prompt response and the clarity therein. What you sent makes sense and I understand. I will explore this solution further.

Thanks again,
Scott

You’re very welcome, Scott.

Thanks again for the file. I like to make certain that I give the right reply, even it seems sometimes extra work for you to share the file. I try (if possible) to not answer from memory.

I tested your file and my set up carefully in different versions—the same result as reported.

Again, thanks for the question.

My best wishes.

Yes, I’ve met the same problem with C4D R23.008 (on iMac Pro with MacOS Catalina and a Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16 Go graphic card) - It seems that the function isn’t working (bug?) at all but also the screen refresh has some lag between the windows in UV Edit Mode. Not easy to understand if it comes only from the software or from the Hardware or from the System OS even. By the way, Scott, your feedback was useful. Thanks a lot. Best regards.

Hi cazalpine,

Please look at the little clip below. I hope that helps to get it working with just “two” more steps.

https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/0eRABdNTZjn7PQfxqyLl05agVin7Rs1JLRDDGDKSD3j

As far as I can see, the problem, the temporal Material-Tag used to select the Projection, is on the left side of the main Material-Tag. In this way, the interactive workflow can be seen only in the UV polygons, but not with the texture.

I have shown two ways, either type an X in the Selection of the Main Material-Tag or move the new (temporal) Tag to the right. In this way, the temporal Material is on Top of the Object and visible. Even if you see now the whole object changing, it will affect only the selected polygons.

An alternative (manual) workflow is shown in post #3.

I hope that things get sorted out soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

All the best
