Hi julopez,

This is a general question, which leaves a lot open. For example, Is the shirt lose around the body, or could it be even used like the skin (thigh)?
The first step is certainly to get the shirt to fit:
https://help.maxon.net/us/index.html#CLOTHTAG-CLOTH_GROUP_DRESSING
https://help.maxon.net/us/index.html#11367
https://help.maxon.net/us/index.html#OCASURFACEDEFORMER

Note that often the cloth are not on top of the skin they are the “skin”.

The speed in which the character moves is also a critical point. This is discussed here.
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/animating_flabiana
Perhaps check the content after 13:10 [min: sec]

If the speed is too high or the result not in the way your art directing needs it, the Cache tool can change those details/problems.
With some cloth animations, I found that having other objects, simpler meshes, less dense as colliders, helps to achieve the desired effect.
I hope these few hints help to get you started.

If you have a scene file, please let me know. If you need an upload link, I can share one (Please note I open only direct links to Dropbox, Amazon, Google, Apple or WeTransfer)

All the best

Hi julopez,

I got your file.

I have no idea how to even get it to bind to the joints, which would be my main suggestion. Certainly not Cloth based. I have had to quit the application twice, after 30+ minutes of trying to do so. Honestly, I knew it, but as I like to test things practically, I try.

The Cloth has TWO million polygons! There is no way that I even would try to use cloth collision, an certainly not explore any animation with that.

The Cloth that you have send consists out of several parts, and they intersect each other already. So the first thing would be to separate those, eliminate the layers of polygons. Perhaps Instant Mesh can lower the polygon-amount, I’m not sure about it. At least I found nothing that worked without separating all the pieces (Pockets, etc.).

Just to be complete in my estimation, I tried the Surface Deformer, and it takes 48MB of data, but the motions are slow and not really convincing.

I tried to un-subdivide it, but it was not possible. You could try to create a rough cage and go from there. However, the cage needs a super smooth weight map to work, and I fear that the rough structure of the cage will be palpable anyway.

Besides, the Cloth already has many folds in it, which would destroy any natural flow IMHO.

You might check with the support if you need a second option on that.

Perhaps you can get a lower res version of the Cloth, and use it instead of the “skin”. I can honestly see no other option, not with my CPU-power.

Good luck.

Hi julopez,

This is certainly a great target to have. Do you have musicians who like to have a video like this? Get a piece of paper that allows you to use the music.

The video that inspired you: watch it as often as you can. After a while, check where your eyes are going, and why you look at one point and not to another. This will give you an idea of where to put your time on the screen and where you get away with less attention. Your audience will most likely look at similar points. Movement and light changes, contrast, and saturation are certainly “eye-catcher”.

With so many elements in it, I would even stress more to get very efficient models. To create a scene that is easy to handle. The faster your computer catches up with your input, the better you can express yourself in this work.

I would start with storyboards to get the story flow. To know how large the elements are in the scene, this helps to get the polygon count low and the file fast.

Perhaps check what can be painted (background) and what will be hidden in darkness or even light.

Make little test scenes, perhaps with Mixamo, to get a look and feel.

Let me know if you need some other tips. I’m happy to look into it.

Again, enjoy the project. It will certainly be great.

Cheers.

Hi julopez,

Of course this needs to be shared first:
https://youtu.be/7qf3sqd6ATc

I checked, but some of my tutorials are currently sadly offline. Since we have our office closed until Monday, I fear that only a few are available:

https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/jet_making_of/jet_making_of_part_07

I did this series based on one of my movies. This movie was printed on celluloid and went along a one-year festival circuit. It won quite a few awards (not feeding my ego here, just telling you that this work had its fire-proof on the big screen. grin This one is now a decade old, but most techniques haven’t really changed.

Note that after a certain distance the parallax is not that noticeable anymore, and even an image will not show up just falt (Given a limited camera move)

Here is a very short demo, perhaps that gives some ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biJYP6tybso

All in all, this is pretty much all about Camera-Mapping and Digital Matte-Painting. Both have more and more merged into one discipline over the past decades.

You will find on my YouTube channel more about this subject, and how to use images to get quickly a scene established, like with the music video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSWrLLlGyJo&list=PLOLI4wu7NPsijH80qg6XvNZdUhlf2Ic5d

===============
MovesByMaxon

This has two parts, facial capture and body capture. In each case, the receiving character needs either a mesh that fits the mesh of the face, or the Blend-Shapes have to set up newly.
https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/3961/
In post #8, I describe a quick way to adapt to the character.

MovesByMaxon has a help button, and it describes how to set up the PoseMorph to a new Character. This does not transfer the blend-shapes (the partial expressions) of the mesh, only the amount of each pose is transferred.

If you like to transfer the Joint animation, then the Rig needs to be the same. One could write an Xpresso to connect similar joints, but my experience is, it will not really be a great idea in the long run.
https://www.cineversity.com/forums/viewthread/3887/
Post #15 shows a little bit about this, but it is tricky, and I wouldn’t really suggest it for a long term project. It’s more of a hack.

I hope that gives you some ideas.

If you have a question, please start a new thread as we now have several topics here, and it will be hard to find something here if it is all so mixed up (I started it, I admit!), but I like to keep things organized nevertheless.

My best wishes, and keep up your motivation!

hey i actually did figure out how to link the t shirt
I made a whole outfit (t shirt / Pants ) on Marvelous designer
How to apply animations = well for this you are going to have to make the animations first on C4d then import an (alembic from C4d after making the animation to Marvelous designer and there you will go to the animation tab and animate the clothing then export it back to cinema 4d as a alembic file
I will make a small Video on how to do the whole animation with clothing and hair and sneakers after i finish my project thank you smile

Sounds good, julopez.

Marvelous Designer looks interesting. You are the second person who mentioned it at all here on Cineversity. The last one in 2016, using FBX for a similar workflow.

The application seems interesting enough, and perhaps when I have a little bit more time, I check it out. What holds me back is the stiff price, considering I have no commercial use for it, other than to help people pipeline wise. But as usual, learning a new app per month is my target for two+ decades. It keeps the impression fresh how it feels to start newly, which I think is a must-have for me. So, you have stirred my interest.

My best wishes for your project.
