Best auto rigger

What is the best auto rigger for C4d? Preferably something that allows a IK/FK switch at a minimum..but auto walk hips and float head would be nice…
I see C4d has one..that goes back a few years. I also see IKMAX, which seems nice..but has no switch that I can see? Are those the best? What is the most robust one? (even if not those two).

I just don’t want to invest too much time learning one when there was something better…

Thanks!

Hi psussi,

The Character Object has IK/FK options. Please have a look here:
https://help.maxon.net/us/index.html#OCHARACTERBASE-ID_CA_CHARACTER_GROUP_USERDATA

The one who designed it has lately worked on several Oscar movies. If there would be something missing, he certainly has all ears and eyes open to him.

For technical directors – You will find as well the option to create your own templates, with the features you like to have (depending on the available TD’s skills), this can go very deep:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/creating_a_custom_template_part_01
It is certainly not for beginners, but if you need things tailored to a specific need, this would be worth watching. Perhaps worth to discuss this in a Maxon: 1on1 session.

You certainly have your ideas and needs to make things great. So, my question would be: What is not to your liking? Cineversity is the place to show how things work. The way to share your thoughts about missing features is Maxon directly.  The designated way for feature request is open and welcomed from Maxon directly.

The fastest way to get features is via this link:
https://support.maxon.net/index.php
Open a ticket and set it to Help Topic: “Suggestions and Ideas for Maxon”. I’m sure you have something in mind that will convince the developers to think about it.
The more people ask for it, the more likely it will be implemented quickly. Thanks in advance for your time.

Please consider the advantage of native tools, in the opposite of tools relying on a 3rd application as well as dependencies of the needed “bridge-plugin” to be up-to-date in time.

My best wishes.

OK, so it seems that the native auto rigger in C4d is the most robust? Better than IKMAX? Yes? If so, Ill start investing some time in that.
I’m decent at rigging, but anything truly advanced, I’d get a real rigger TD, which I’ve needed in the past. That being said, is there a “go to” guy for advanced character rigging. I’ve seen some people in the forums looking for riggers, and the reels seem a little basic (which is fine) but if I need a screen usable rig…just wondering is there is someone out there who is advanced.

So..2 questions:

Stick with native auto rigger? (not paid 3rd party)
Know a great character rigger (body and facial)?

Thanks!

Hi psussi,

Thanks for the question, but here I can’t tell you what is better. As usual, I do not make comparisons at all to 3rd party content.
On what parameters would I give this a fair test? How would my set up be able to be a general judgment? I’m too long into this game to go there, of course. I like to focus on what I know and what I can test instantly with the current build and go from there. I typically do not even answer from memory, as things regularly change (OS, hardware, updates, etc.).
Each artist has a different idea of how things should work.

You will find in most of my posts more than one way to do things. Which means there is no right or wrong, good or worse way to do something. What works for you might be inefficient for someone else.

Besides: I do not use Max nor this plugin, and I do not see at any time in my future to use Max at all. So, what quality would have a quick view of that at all? I would feel like an imposter to just squeeze and opinion out. You know your needs best, and your own exploration would have much more value.

I think what is possible since a while, is discussed here:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/siggraph_2015_rewind_bret_bays_creating_a_character_rigging_pipeline

The best way is typically to have a TD who can create what is needed, as this clip shows. Python has shown again and again to be the problem solver. Maxon has even a specific forum for that.

So, sorry to not give you what you like to have, but I know my boundaries.

All the best

Thanks for your reply, psussi, very much appreciated.

Here is an old but speedy intro:

Again: if you find something that can be improved, please make a suggestion to Maxon.

My best wishes for your explorations.
