WOW what a great series! Thank you good sir Noseman. I am much more stupid than you and learning so much albeit I can easily pronounce icosahedron and anyone who cannot should be placed in speech therapy, Greek or not! XD

I cannot seem to build a redshift shader that has a base material and uses each vertex map as a different colour. I have tried using material blender and the shader node but I am not setting it up correctly at all.  The current result is a mess of a gradient/blend of the colours(see attached JPEG and c4d file). I would like to, for example, have the ball all black (or a material metal preset) and each vertex map be either all very different bright colours or an different incandescent materials (is that possible?)

I am new to redshift so excuse my lack of vertex mapping inside nodes. Thank you in advance to anyone who knows how to do this smile

Hi LDReDD,

If I get your question correctly, as the good Noseman pointed out, this can be set up in the same way for RedShift. Of course, the standard Cinema 4D material and a node-based system are different. I guess here is the core of the question.

In Redshift, call up the RS Vertex Attribute, while this node is selected, you can drag the Vertex Tag into the Attribute Name field.
https://docs.redshift3d.com/display/RSDOCS/Vertex+Attribute
Please note, that can be done as well with the C4D Vertex Map
https://www.redshift3d.com/forums/viewthread/24265/

This results in a Monochrome (Black to White) map, which can then be used like any alpha texture.

To apply it, use, for example, the RS Material Blender or the Color Layer input is the one you want for the RS Vertex map. The Ramp should get the Vertex information.
https://docs.redshift3d.com/display/RSDOCS/Material+Blender
https://docs.redshift3d.com/display/RSDOCS/Color+Layer

The idea is that black and white are seen as zero to one. Whereby black stands for transparency and white for opaque, and gray for everything between.

All the best

Hi Doctor,
Three time now I have typed out a response and it is not posting it…no idea why that is happening.
Thank you for your speedy reply and links to resources.  I found them helpful!  I have much to learn!!

I found this tutorial to be most helpful in understanding how it works with 1 map and 2 textures.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw2zhjd3dBI&list=PLArvihax6b7UsgdtCx-9pArrWQHDajLzs&index=24

I still do not have all 3 maps in 1 shader doing what I would like but will keep working at it.
It also appears that my images and files are not attaching when I try and respond with them in this post. I will also try to do that in a separate reply.

Thank you again fort helping me and all of us life long learners on here smile Happy Sunday Dr!

Hi LDReDD,

Files need to be zipped, below 4MB, and jpg smaller 800x600, but yes, the MIME recognition is triggered quickly. If it doesn’t fit the profile, it won’t let it through.

The Layer shader should do what you like to do.

Since this tutorial series was not about RedShift, and it feels that you might need a Forum that cares to 100% about Redshift, why not checking things over where it is discussed daily anyway.
https://www.redshift3d.com/forums
This feels so much more what you need right now.

Yes, I would love not only to discuss Cinema 4D; While focusing as well as on Redshift. Then use of any of the great RedGiant apps to cover a broader production pipeline.
Over a decade ago, Stu Maschwitz had pushed the industry to use linear (v. gamma), and I was thrilled about it. This was around the time of my JET production. (I love the feature-film/motion-graphic pipeline, and there is not a single day where I do not read about it.)
I did this with the large tutorial series JET here on Cineversity. Well, I used, of course, RedGiant Software already back then. But for now, I have the impression we have not the platform nor the tutorials to do so.

For now, I think the best way is to answer is with a native Cinema 4D tool; you can explore those and translate them into RedShift. Once you went one time through this, you own the knowledge. Which is my target, of course.
Here is a Node-based set up for three different ways to colorize the standard Vertex Map, then mix them into one Color information and use them on a single object. The Random Field is used in the Displacer, so there is a connection between displacement and color.

Thank you so much for all the info! Doctor how do you keep up with all the posts and emails?! You are so fast at replying to everyone!!!

I think you are right - I probably should of posted this to the redshift forumn - I have been digging around there and TONS of material for me to go over to understand how to build what is in my mind.

I recently completed School of Motions VFX course and Stu Maschwitz explains exactly what you are describing in a podcast! SO COOL that guy is super smart (hehe like you!) and really helped shape the industry.  Check out his recent NAB if you have not already - he showcases a fun little covid nurf war video breakdown.

Thanks so much for that example project file as well - Jonas taught me all I node about nodes (bad joke LOL) I am excited to use the uber node system with redshift!!  Have a great day Dr smile

Hi LDReDD,

Keeping up, well my 16/7 approach seems to work. wink

Congratualtions about your School of Motion success! I hope you had a great time over there.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Yes, Stu certainly knows his stuff. In 2004 I had joint the Pixelcorps, where he was also a member. We had roughly 3,000 members there from all over the world. All working on film or motion graphics and art itself. It was a breathtaking time to really fill my toolbox with all there is needed to know. (Well, the learning never stops.)
The idea was to share what we know with each other and grow in that way. I shared in three years my first 700 tutorials.

Later I took a classes even with Stu over at FXPHD about RED and Lenses and other themes.

Yes, of course, I have watched his presentation, I couldn’t wait to see his DVRebel approach to it.
When you have a moment and check out my JET series, you will find some ideas fo his DV Rebel book that was used to build my own dolly. By now, that DIY water-pipe dolly is replaced with a little Dana Dolly, of course, but back then, that made a few shots possible in my movies.

In other words, I have considerable respect for Stu’s work and his published ideas! I hope we can do movies at one point, as RedGiant did so far by themself.
I see great things coming out of the Maxon trio (RedShift, RedGiant, and Maxon’s Cinema 4D).

When you check out the “Integration” series of mine, it looks like a basic introductory course for the Compositing Application RedGiant has created. I’m playing with the idea to put ten parts on top of it with the tools we have now.

Nodes are wonderful and I guess once more people get the hang of it, we will see more and more content (production as well as education) about it.

All I node about wink  (Funny)

Have a great day as well, stay safe, stay healthy.
