can anyone direct me to a tutorial that shows how to model crushed ice?

I need to model a squeezy cup filled with crushed ice - the cup i can manage, but after that i have no idea how to fill it.

I have hunted the web and not seen anything that looks useful.

thanks
Adam

Hi Adam,

You posted in the tutorial suggestions. This is meant to ask for tutorials-themes to be produced. If you can’t find anything with search, ask in the Q&A Forum.

I have set up a little sketch. Rudimentary materials, etc. and all more meant as a pointer.

The Voronoi Fracture is perhaps the key here, with some default Dynamics, to be able to harvest the ice.

I hope that gives you some ideas.

The Voronoi Fracture could also be simpler (no details), and layers of ice could be created than with the resulting chunks, and the Volume Object. Including the same use of the Displacer.

All the best

thank you - my apologies for the wrong forum choice.

I did find something that pointed me at the voronoi object, soon after posting, and i think you’re right…its definitely the way to go.

a little ore experimenting and i think i might have something usable. I will also check out your links as soon as possible!

Heres a screengrab of the model so far…

regards
Adam

Hi Adam,

BTW, thanks for using Apple, Dropbox, Amazon, Adobe or Google, if you use a cloud service.

No worries about the entry, I just want to make sure that things are in the right place. Which makes it easier for everyone later on to find.

I can’t see your screen capture.

I’m sure with a little exploration, the Voronoi Fracture will give you a lot of variety to chose from.

Ice, besides the shape, lives from light, in refraction and reflection. A good HDRi map is undoubtedly a key element.

Stay safe, stay healthy.

hopfully the screengrab should be attached now - (too many pixels on the first grab!)

very interesting to see how you made the ice - although its a lot more complex than mine - i really need to find time to studythe whole 3d modelling world. All those vertex maps/colours/edges etc leave me totally baffled!

can i just ask ( trying to breakdown the project is confusing me) - did you make the multiple cubes , then put all into one voroni fracture object to break them all, then put thwm in a Connect object and deselect everything?  I’m puzzled why a null called Connect then holds one voronoi and a displacer yet you can still see the broken cubes from the deselcted objects?

Hi Adam,

I see that you want really tiny ice chunks, not based on cubes at all.

I will try to find a more straightforward method.

Talk to you soon.

Hi Adam,

Here is a one-minute screen capture as well as the scene file.
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/Y74y26a84eOV2jwg4oxJ8eujRpb2nB9whmVQlrdY4KS

The idea is to use the Landscape object in spherical mode and have four similar objects under the Cloner. While set to blend, you get a lot of variations out of it. I used the Shape>Ellipsoid here, as a moving mesh would have been a long calculation.
With the MoGraph Select option, select the clones that are not useful, and with the Hide Selected art-direction is an easy task.

To your questions:
The Connect object reproduces all children of it as a single new dataset. When I use the Current State To Object, the Connect becomes a Null, and the children polygon object[s].
Yes, I used eight cubes in the first example. But since you like to have more gravel-like results, I dropped the ideas with cubes.

I hope that works for you, and if there is a question, please never hesitate to ask.

I have not included the HDRi map, as you might have your own or pick one from the Content Browser.

All the best, stay safe, stay healthy.

P.S.: one more, perhaps the simplest I can think of right now: (Besides just a simple Cloner + object and crumble the results.)

Enjoy.
