I am following a tutorial on Cineversity where the author (Raymond Olsen) is able to reflect a sky object in his scene with a material containing a gradient in the color channel. Unfortunately, I’m unable to get the same results and cannot get the technique to work in my project. The tutorial can be found here: https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/creating_a_sports_logo_with_cv-artsmart/creating_a_sports_logo_with_cv-artsmart_environment_and_render_settings and Raymond adds in the sky around 4:35 in the video (Also, here is a link to see how Raymond’s render looks with and without a sky: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z3ir2zcdx58nq9y/raccoon-author-example.png?dl=0 ). He is using Cinema R18 so it may be that my version of Cinema (R20) doesn’t handle materials the same way. If this is the case, how would I have the reflection of the sky show up in R20 similar to what Raymond has?

I ran into a similar problem before but got around it by using PBR materials that seemed to allow you to use objects to light a scene. Though, since I’ve been following this particular series by Raymond, I have set up a lot of materials that are not PBR materials and altering my current setup seems like it will take a lot of time to do. Plus, I don’t know how I can get a similar result as Raymond did using the PBR materials and keeping my colors unaltered. Any recommendations would be very helpful. Thanks!

Hi Will N

This reflection can’t be from the Sky, as the Sky has no texture around 4:35. Later he places a gradient. Is that what you need?

I started R20 again and explored your question. Perhaps something in the one minute clip might help.

Refections will add color values to the surface, and so change the existing color, but I guess I miss something that is not in the images you provided. Have you considered to use multi-pass renderings, to have more control over it? Thanks for using Dropbox, if you have a scene file, I will take a look into it.

The Editor reflection preview is undoubtedly dependent on the hardware used.

If the question is related to the tutorial, please use only the Help button below the tutorial. The Q&A is more for anything else; So, things stay organized. Thanks for considering it.

All the best

Thanks so much for your quick response as always Dr. Sassi! You are once again super helpful smile I will try following your video to see if I can get the gradient to show up in my render. That is my main problem now. My materials are reflective but aren’t showing the material gradient that is from the sky for some reason.

Will N.,

You’re very welcome.

Please try the file below. I have included a screenshot for comparison:

With color, it is maybe more comfortable to see what is going on.

Cheers
