Only allow joints for binding weights?

Hi,

I have nulls in a joint chain for organizational purposes.
The problem is when I select the whole joint chain for binding to geometry the null is also included as an influence.

I check the bind options to include only joints (and not nulls). But I couldn’t find any.

Is there something I am missing out here?

Thank you for looking at my problem.

Hi Ben,

When you have selected the whole group (Joints incl. Nulls), go to the Object Manager and deselect all the Nulls, as shown in the image below.

All the best

Hi Dr. Sassi,

So, I guess its not possible in the bind options. Thanks for the confirmation and for presenting a workaround.

Have a great day ahead!

Ben,

You’re welcome. Nice that it works for you.

Your comment sounds like that there would be something wrong with the Bind Command. Since many people read the forum, we have to clear that point.

If you need that option, make a suggestion:
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center

Please note that you can use a wide variety of objects in a hierarchy to give a weight-value. Which means the most usable filter would be “Only Joints”. Otherwise, it would be very a very long list.

This is not a workaround. Nulls are ignored in the weight-listing by default with the first Filter. See image.

My post above: This filter option for the active object[s] is the way to not have them in the joints-list at all, and no need for a filter in the Weight Manager.

Cheers.

Hi @Dr. Sassi

RE: Nulls are ignored in the weight-listing by default with the first Filter.
Yes, yes they are ignored but they appear in the list of the weight list. Since I handle several models and exporting them to .txt file
I’d prefer not a clean list and not have any nulls at all.

RE: Suggestion.
Yes, I’ll probably will. I just probably do it in bulk since I still have to put my credentials every time I make a suggestion.

Thanks a lot for the reply, Ben.

I can see the need if the Nulls are on the list already, and you would like to get a result without them.
For now, I could only suggest going into the
Weight Manager> Joins> Menu> Filter> Name Sort: Name

If you haven’t renamed the Nulls, or they have all the same name, it would be the easiest way to delete those.

I encourage you to submit the suggestions. I’m more happy with extra options than with unhappy artists! (…seriously!)

Cheers
