Spline projection?

Hello

I’m trying to achieve an effect like this : https://d2w9rnfcy7mm78.cloudfront.net/5277572/original_4f5a492a57259f313095148d5d043ffd.gif?1571341345?bc=0

I’m wondering if this is a spline projection approach or is there a better approach?  I would want to have spheres wrapped around a circle but I want them to have some thickness so I can put a material on them.

Thanks for any pointers!

Hi Alex,

Please have a look at these tow files
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/iEmN4vOuafXiMvDeEhG1IQ3atuMcydpHuYzkl06OM4J

The first one (01) works, as long as you move it along the Z-axis, which means the Rotation needs to be done on the Parent.

The second file (11) has a Target Tag, but that causes a flip when the target and the Circle have the same position, which will change the texture.

Would one or the other work for you?

You wrote the Sphere wrapped around the Circle, I understand the Circle should be wrapped around the Sphere. If I’m wrong, let me know.

Cheers

Hey Sassi

You are right, I meant circle wrapped on a sphere smile
Thanks for these, they are great.  The only thing that is missing is the “bending” on the surface of the sphere.  It feels like the circles actually “wrap” along the surface rather than follow the circumference.
This is why I thought it might need a projection approach, but maybe it is simpler than that?

Thanks!

Alex,

How about this approach?

If you adjust the Field, the Wrapping and releasing will change. I have set it up to look like the “Donut” shape is colliding with the Sphere, and get back to its shape when leaving.

Is that closer to what you like to have?

Enjoy.

Hey Sassi
Yes this is coming closer.  However I think I didn’t explain what I wanted correctly…Basically what I’m hoping to achieve is that the circle is “filled”, so like a membrane that is deforming across the surface of the circle.  So like a circle bending as it travels across the surface of the circle.
Maybe it would be a bit as if you were to slowly “spherify” a cirle, or distort it to slowly fill the surface of the sphere and then scale back down.
Does that make sense?

Thanks again!

Alex,

How about this version?

You might adjust, or even switch off the inner Field.

Cheers

Ha, this is great!
What is the formula node in the Xpresso setup doing?

One thing I wonder is if there is a way for me to rotate the disc along the sphere?  It seems that with this setup it needs to move from one side to the other? Or maybe I don’t fully understand what is possible.

Thanks again!

Alex,

Just animate the Top Null (Parent) to rotate. The Sphere can stay static if needed.
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/WXfHfN8V8OANVHVM2GRuUvTzYuS5IHuWpONBnEpLUcJ

The formula is Pythagoras:
The sum of the areas of the two squares on the legs (a and b) equals the area of the square on the hypotenuse (c). Here, c^2-b^2= a^2
