pretty low brow question, just starting out in fields.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpJbOzQclVg&t=2024s

I have watched this quite a few times but can’t seem to solve my problem.
In the most basic set up the vertex max growth I have moves as I want it to and the disp is working too, but, when i move the Spherical field the original Disp animation remains and only my Vertex map animation moves. So I end up with 2 Disp and 1 Vertex map.
My Geo is is a plane with a Disp and a Spherical field as a child of the Disp see attachment

Any help here would be appreciated

Hi Burgess,

Please always with a scene file (zipped), images are just not enough, but thanks for the effort!

Here is a file, with the main parts in question in it.

All the best

(I moved this to Q&A, as it the tutorial forum should be used only via the “Help” button. )

Thanks, Burgress, for the file.

The Displacer needs the information to work, and this information can be a simple Color Shader in the Shading Tab options. In your file there was no entry, so no data to work with. Let me know if you need more input to get this working.

The fields itself work like Photoshop [Ps] Layer. Except, there is no Freeze option in Ps. The Freeze stores the values. (This is optional, not always needed nor wanted.) If a layer above it is set to Max, this will be added. If the Freeze is set to grow or average, the newly added values from the layer above will be added to the already available information. Then averaged or grow will happen to that specific information.

In the presentation, he uses a Restriction Tag to limit the influence area of the Displacer Deformer. This is all fine, but you can use the Weight Tag directly in the Falloff of the Displacer. Try both ways, of course.

I have five files set up for you, each a little bit different. Before you change anything, have a look at the scene-file while the play-head is moving. Then switch one part off and on again to see the change. If something is not clear, please ask. If it is clear, go to the next.

Scene files, based on your file above:

So far, I have too little to go on, to be more supportive, but with each question, I might pinpoint what you need to feel confident about setting them up.

I would suggest to check out this series.

First, just have a look here:
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaytut/demystifying_cinema_4d_fields_where_can_we_use_fields
This should give you a solid base for any Field related work.

You can then check this knowledge here and practice along with him
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/morphing_objects_with_volumes_fields

To see how much you can master this, here is an advanced series.
https://www.cineversity.com/vidplaylist/growing_structures_branches_and_veins

Yes, this is a lot, but think of this as a three-segment course to master this Field (pun intended)

In any case, ask if you got stuck, or if you got stuck, go a few steps back where you felt comfortable, typically a moment later is the missing piece of information.

ENJOY

Hi Sassi,

thanks so much for the files, I really appreciate it and hope it is of some help to other Fields noobs.
I have taken them apart and am getting my head around it slowly. I have managed to replicate your file and got there in the end, I wanted to understand rather than just use your file.

Dropping the vertex map into the Disp Field was a revelation! This step was not clear in Lorcan’s video.

My only question would be that, although it seems to be working properly, the yellow of your vertex field is a lot more saturated than mine and makes me ask the question am I doing my vertex selection properly - I’d hate the vertex not work elsewhere, in a shader for example, because I had done my selection wrong.

My process was to;
create the plane and make editable.
Select all polys and set vertex weight to 0%

Thanks again for your patience and help

Thanks for the reply, Burgress,

If you like to apply a Vertex Weight-map, all you need is to go into point mode (while the Polygon Object is active in the Object Manager), then
Main Menu>Select> Set Vertex Weight Map.
No Selection of polygons or points needed. Use 0% weight, while asked in the little Window that opens.

Here is a little screen capture and the created scene file:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/JpyZNVPQbN0hhahcFJCQB7fuLTCCDnQmAYklxs9DD2p

I have had watched the whole presentation back then live, today I watch only the part you pointed to. I’m not sure if he used the Vertex Weight tag for the Falloff. I saw him using the Restriction Tag, which works as well, but when we can do with one element less, why not.

No patience needed, I’m happy to help.
Let me know if there is anything else.

Cheers

Once again, than you

Sounds good, Burgess, thanks for the feedback.

Yes, please, if there is a question, please let me know, I’m happy to look into it.

ENJOY!
