New Redshift Standard Material and Fresnel - Leaves

Hi Dr. S and Maxon Team

I’m using Insydium Taiaio trees in C4D 26 (latest versions including RS)
I was making the leaf material, and looking at some older tutorials on Redshift materials, utilizing a fresnel node + ramp in the emissions channel, so the result is a translucent leaf with a sort of darker edge.

However, with the new RS standard material, the fresnel doesn’t seem to work.

I’ve been working with it for a few hours and can’t seem to get the fresnel to work.
I’ve tried it in the emissions channel (nope!), opacity (def not) and any other node i can pipe it, and nothing.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks!

Hi Sharon,

Have you looked into Diffuse>Back-Lighting/Translucency?

The Emission would be an unusual channel because if you dial your scene down to the Golden Hour or even darker, the leaves will keep the same brightness, and if GI is enabled, it might illuminate the scene. If that is the target, of course, use it.

If you like to tune in the edges to be darker, use a tiny little image. To calculate for every leaf, the Fresnel will only cause darker edges if all leaves “look” at the camera and have the borders bend away from the camera.

The default leaves of the Taiao are very simple, and a texture map for nice leaves is simple to do.

All the best

Hey Dr. S
Thanks for getting back to me.

1. Here is the video that I am referring, time stamp @ 18:30.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBbyVtXfXA4&t=1136s

2. There is no diffuse>backlighting/translucency on the new RS standard materials. That’s what im using on this project.

I’m trying to use the RS standard materials.

Thanks tons!

Hey Dr. S.
I was just playing around with the RS standard materials.

Maybe….fresnel, like you said, isn’t needed.
Maybe adjusting the transmission will give the translucency?!!

hmmmm

Hi Sharon,

Please have a look here:

HI DR. S!
Thanks for the project file.
That’s almost there…but i was wanting to use the new RS standard materials, where there is NO back-lighting/translucency.

thanks!

Hey Dr. S.

I think I may have a solution.
I piped the diffuse texture into the transmision and set it to .308, and subsurface = .595.
I also set it to thinwalled.

It looks really pretty.
The only downside is in the viewport, the leaves are black. (the render seems ok)
So i pipped the texture(set to srgb) into the diffuse channel and turned it up, then i was able to see it in the viewport.

Not sure if it’s the way to do it. Maybe you pro’s have a better solution. I tend to go about things the hard way :D

Thanks!

Hi Sharon,

I have no problems with this in any RS material (Material or Standard).

Here is an example where I started with the Standard material but also added the previous setup. When I render one or the other, after connecting RS Standard or RS Material to “Surface”, I get the same result.

Example:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/egd6qgq6ggujez1/CV3_S26_drs_22_RSsr_14.zip?dl=0

For you other problems wit the view port, I’m not certain if I can reproduce this here. Are the Editor> Display options set?
