Reduce Highlights of the Default Material (i.e. no material applied)?

Hi,

Is it possible to tone down the highlights of the default material (i.e. no material applied)?
I understand that it helps to define edges/shapes but I prefer it toned down.

See reference image here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qysf5to8lpls8ur/2019-06-02_13-11-36.png?dl=0

Is this possible?

P.S. I also understand that there is an alternative of creating a flat material, but it’s a bit cumbersome to create material every now and then just for that. Looking for a universal controller instead.

Hi bentraje,

The is no option to set the default light’s specular to off. (BTW – there are two lights, so the scene is always illuminated, but only one will be rendered).

If you go to Viewport> Display and chose Constant Shading (Lines), the specular effect goes away. You find the short cuts in the pull-down menu (… or set a new one).

You could just place one single light in the scene, preferably as a child close to the camera, and switch in the Attribute Manager> General> Specular off.
To have the work-camera and light set up always in the scene, set this up in a new scene and use then the
Main Menu> Window> Customization> Save as new Scene (New.c4d is the file that will be copied as the new scene from then on)

Anyway, you can also move the light away, so it hits a different place

Thanks for the response, but not really what I am after. The solutions above have compromises.
Anyway, it’s not a deal breaker. I’m just used to how models look in Maya. That’s why I want to turn down the highlights.

Thanks again. Have a great day ahead!

Hi

My workaround was to create a default material with no specular,
and set it in the default c4d file, so every new file has the Mat in the material manager and you’ll need to apply it to your models.

Personally i prefer it Maya style as well..

Hope it helps

Hi bentraje,

Have you tried to set the Attribute Manager> Mode> Project Settings> Material? If you set a brighter color here, the contrast between the primary color and the specular color is minimized.
If the scene is then too bright, you might set up the Render Settings> Options> Global Brightness to a lower value. This can be very similar to the Maya default.

Perhaps someone can write a script to toggle between the setting, as the Render Settings will take effect on the result as well.

If all of that is not working for you, please make your wishes here:

@Gilk

Thanks for the response. Yes, that was my last resort. Creating a material. But it gets tricky to manage if you have a lot of objects.

Anyhow, thanks for the response.

Hi bentraje, hi Gil,

Here is a file where I have set up a Working Camera with working lights. Going by all Maya Views I have seen, the Specular is somewhat diffused, and the light allows for some darkness in the “Fresnel” parts.

Here is the example:
https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/lDtB4WudmVmpJLdOJJzj2pknZhfdYF9EvQ49L7wyIcY

If this and even post #4 isn’t working, whereby I would create a render preset to avoid problems for post #4, you need to voice your needs to Maxon.
