Render Equirectangular and Omni-directional Stereo imagery using Octane in C4D

Learn how to use Octane's Panoramic Camera to render 360° and VR Video directly from Cinema 4D. You'll first create an omni-directional stereo image for a basic test scene, and then apply the same technique to create a VR version of the first scene in Beeple's Zero-Day. The Measure One scene from Beeple's Zero-Day can be downloaded freely from Beeple's webiste, beeple-crap.com.

- In this tutorial we're going to look at how to prepare and upload a 360 degree or omnidirectional stereo render from Cinema 4D onto Facebook. We've talked a lot in this series already about 360 degree NVR videos with relation to YouTube, but Facebook actually supports the same technology and actually in the same exact formats. So we can take the same file that we've output from Cinema 4D, which is an equal rectangular projection and it's two views docked on top of each other for the left and the right eye. And we can then bring it into After Effects like we did for YouTube and just export this out as an MP4 by setting it out to the Adobe media encoder queue. Now when it comes to encoding this file, Facebook does have some guidelines that they provided to us. And you can learn about this more at 360video.fb.com, and there's a learn link, and there are some resources here on best practices and also guide for creating 360 degree video. And if we look at that guide, you'll see that Facebook recommends that we upload files that are no bigger than 1.75 Gigabytes, no longer than 10 minutes in duration. They have to be MPEG-4 and they have to be in the H.264 encoding. And we have a maximum here of 60 fps, and recommended 20 Megabits per second for 30 fps of mono footage and 30 Megabits per second for 60 fps of mono footage. We're working at 30 fps, but we do have stereo footage, but for now we're just going to go ahead and output at the same 20 Megabits per second that they recommend. There is information here on the audio codec, and you notice here that they do say that the resolution should be as high as possible with a maximum of 4K, and they define 4K as 4096 by 2048. So you can actually go a little bit larger with Facebook video than you can with the YouTube video, but for now we're just going to use the same files that we've already prepared. So what we'll do is go ahead and encode this file. I'm going to save it to my C4D folder and we're going to call this as “Aquahall_Beeple_Facebook." And we'll double check that our bit rate matches what Facebook recommended there. We are outputting at 4K 30 FPS, and here we're ouputting a VBR of 10 Megabits per second. So we'll go ahead and increase this to 20, and that way we're taking advantage of the full bit rate that Facebook recommends. We will go ahead and click Okay and we'll render that out. While we're waiting for this to render, I'll point out a key difference between Facebook 360 videos and YouTube VR, and that is that Facebook doesn't support VR in Cardboard currently. It does support VR or stereo view of the 360 degree image in the Samsung Gear VR apparently, but if you don't own a Samsung Gear VR, which is a little bit harder to get a hold of than a Cardboard, you will only be able to view the image in 360 degrees. Now of course that's still a great experience being able to pan your mouse around in either the desktop, or a mobile device being able to simply move the phone around, and get a different view of the scene. But just be aware that Facebook supports VR videos in the Samsung Gear VR, whereas YouTube supports them in devices that support Google Cardboard. Both of them will gracefully take the stereo image, and present it in a 2D form that you can view if you don't have the 3D VR experience available. Now also while that finishes rendering, we'll go ahead and jump over to YouTube and their support section. Just like with YouTube videos, we need to inject the final MP4 with some metadata that tells Facebook that this file is a spherical 360 video. And for that we're just going to use the same metadata tool that's provided by YouTube. So if you haven't downloaded it already, you can get it at this page, which is linked in the tutorial description. And you're going to want to download the 360 video metadata app for either Mac or Windows. So just go ahead and click that download link, and unzip it and open up the app. We'll jump back and check on our media encode, and you can see that it is complete, so we'll go ahead and inject the metadata now. I already have the application open, so we'll just go ahead and click the open button and will choose the Facebook video that we just created. And we'll go ahead and hit Open. And again we need to check that this is a Spherical MP4 and also that it represents 3D top to bottom, and we'll go ahead and hit Save As. And we will go ahead and save this with the _injected. I actually leave that injected suffix there, because it makes it really clear to me which version of the file is ready for posting on Facebook or YouTube. So I'm going to go ahead and hit Save, and that's going to save a new version of the MP4. And now we can go ahead and switch back to the browser. And 'm going to switch to the Cineversity Facebook page. To upload this video, you just simply go to your Facebook page, either your personal page or the one for your business or brand, and in the status box here we'll switch to Photo/Video and choose to upload a photo or video. And here we're going to go ahead, and choose the file that we prepared, which is this one right here that's been injected with the metadata. And I'm going to go ahead and click Open, and it will begin to upload. And while it's uploading, we can go ahead and say something about the video. I'm going to say, "Check out this 360 view of Beeple's Aquahall. Learn how to create this and other 360 degree VR videos at Cineversity.com!” And we'll add some links and stuff later. I'm also going to go ahead and a video title, “Aquahall by Beeple, ” and I'm going to go ahead and add a custom thumbnail. And I've got a standard render here of the same scene that's ready to go for the thumbnail. Now one key thing to note is that on the Advanced tab, there is an option here to say that this video was recorded in 360 degree format. In my experience, if you're uploading a stereo VR file, you want to go ahead and leave that checkbox unchecked, and allow Facebook to parse the metadata itself. This is something that might change. VR video is still very new, and the sites are still learning how to best process it. But it appears to me that checking this box will override the metadata that you have already set in the file, and in this case Facebook won't see the video as a stereo file, but will instead see it strictly as a 360 degree file and so you'll see both eyes. So now that this is all uploaded, I'm going to go ahead and choose to save this as a draft, because I'm going to want to go ahead and look at it before I share it out to the world. If you're posting this on your personal page, you might want to go ahead and just share it only to you initially until you have a chance to take a look at it. So I'm going to choose to Save Draft. Facebook is going to let me know that it's still doing some processing on the video and I'm going to get a notification when it's done. So I'm going to go ahead and close that and we'll wait for that notification. In my experience, it takes about five minutes for Facebook to finish processing the video. But as soon as it does, as promised, you'll see a notification. And if we refresh this page, we can see that we now have a draft ready to go. So we'll go ahead and view that draft. And here we have our 360 video. So I'm going to go ahead and open the post. There we get a nice preview of what this is going to look like. And if I hit the Play button, we'll open in a new window, and here you can see that we have a 360 degree video that we can navigate around just like we can in YouTube. And I don't have a Samsung Gear VR. But if you do, perhaps you can view this in full stereo VR. I hope you enjoy creating 360 degree and VR videos using Cinema 4D. And if you do, please be sure to share your creations with us at Cineversity.
Voy a entrar en After Effects.
