Using the Sweep Generator, Spline Wrap Deformer and Displacer Deformer to create the Exhaust Trail

In this video you will be introduced to working with Generators and Deformers. Because Generators and Deformers rely heavily on their position in a hierarchy, issues can sometimes arise when trying to follow the same process used for Primitives and Deformers, or Generators and Splines. As you continue to construct the rocket ship, you’ll learn an alternative method for applying deformers within a hierarchy.

In this video you'll learn how to create the smoke trail following the rocket using a combination of generators and deformers. Before you get started, if the rocket isn't already hidden from the view port you'll want to hide it now. Click the top visibility dot for the rocket null until it turns red and the rocket disappears from view. Now, to start you're going to create a "Sweep". A Sweep pushes a profile spline along a guide spline. This is great for creating pipes and similar shapes or in this case the exhaust. The "Sweep" can be found in the generators palette or through the create menu. If you take a look at the icon you can see two white lines. One representing the profile and the other representing the guide So to create the exhaust that means you'll first need to draw out a guide spline. Go to the spline palette and select the linear spine tool, With the linear spline tool selected draw out two points in the top view panel the line with the Z axis. Now, switch to the move tool and select both points. Since the actual curve of the exhaust trail is going to be handled by a derformer you want the geometry of the exhaust itself to follow a straight line. To ensure this you can adjust the guide spline so that it is perfectly straight. Using the coordinate manager make sure that the size X is zero, and that the position Z & position X are also zero. Now, because the only thing the spline control is the length of the exhaust to adjust the length all you need to do is adjust the scale Z in the coordinate manager. Enter in a new length and then click "Apply". This makes the spline longer but still keeps it centered. Next, you'll want to rename the spline to "exhaust_guide". Just like with the other splines this one will not render until you generate some geometry based off of it. This will be done using the sweep generator. So, from the generators palette select the "Sweep" object. Then double click the object name in the object manager rename this to "exhaust_sweep". Once this is done make the exhaust guide a child of the sweep. Now, nothing happens and that is expected remember some generators require multiple spines before they create any resulting in geometry. So, you will now need to create the profile that will be swept along the guide. Start by creating a circle spline from the spline palette make this fairly large around 300 cm should be a good start. Then, double click on the object name in the object manager and rename the spine to "exhaust_profile". Now, drag the exhaust profile into the exhausts suite heirarchy so that it is on the same level as the exhaust guide. Now, you'll finally see a result although not exactly right the The Sweep uses the Z axis of the profile spline to determine which axis it will be pushed along. Since the Z axis of the circle spline is currently pointing along its edge the resulting sweep is flat. In the case of drawing a spline or adding spline primitives the active view port can affect the orientation of the primitive. Like, the circle spine. Now, this is something that can be handled pretty easy by changing the orientation of the circle spline to "XY". You'll see doing so gives you the expected result. In the future, if you want to make life a little easier especially when working with profile splines for the sweep draw out the profile spine or add the primitive spline all the front view is the active view. If you do this you'll see that the orientation for the circle sp.ine is already set correctly. Now, the order of these splines in the heirarchy is extremely important. In this case, the swept geometry is created by sweeping A along B, or the first child along the second. In this case, changing the order of the splines in the heirarchy has a significant effect, but in the end you want to Sweep the exhaust profile along the Sweep guide. This means that you need to place the exhaust profile first and the exhaust guide second. Now, the result you're looking for isn't anything special, but this will be the base for the exhaust. Next, you'll want to add some shape along the length of the Sweep. You can do this with the scale attributes found in the object tab of the sweep object. This isn't the end of scale though. Towards the bottom of the object tab there's a gray title bar named details clicking the title bar causes it to unfold revealing advanced controls for the sweep object. The first attribute under the detail section is the scale. This is represented by a spline graph spline graphs can be found in several places within cinema 4D, and they will allow you to adjust anything that has a range associated with it. This could be time, color, or in the case of the sweep it controls the scale of the sweep along the length of the exhaust guide. On either side of the spline graph you have spline knots with the spline itself between them. You can click on a knot to select it, and then click & drag to change its position in the spline graph. The left side of the graph represents the scale at the start of the spline. While the right hand side represents the scale at the end of the spline You can also add more knots along the spline by Ctrl clicking on the spline wherever you'd like to insert a new knot. Now, as you adjust this new point you'll notice that the geometry created by the sweep doesn't change. This is because there are no edges along the length of the sweep. If you can't already see the lines in the view port go to the display menu and choose "Quick Shading (Lines)" Now, the geometry that you see is controlled by the intermediate points of the exhaust profile and the exhaust guide. Click on the exhaust guide first. In the object tab there's a drop down for intermediate points Currently this is set to "Adaptive" which will only add intermediate points based on the curvature of the spline. Because the exhaust guide is perfectly straight no intermediate points are created, and the result is no extra edges being generated by the sweep. Which is generally fine, but in some cases you need to have more edges along the sweep. Since you want exact control over the number of intermediate points you can choose a uniform from the drop down. As soon as you do this the shape of the exhaust changes. This is because of the spline graph, and you can also see new edges along the length of the swept geometry. By increasing the number in the attribute manager you'll increase the number of edges along the sweep. Changing the number to a value of 250 adds a significant amount of geometry to the smoke trail but it also produces a much better looking shape. Because having more polygons allows for more detail. Now, you can also control the number of edges going around the surface created by the sweep object. This can be done by adjusting the intermediate points of the exhaust profile. Click on the exhaust profile and then set the intermediate points drop down to uniform. you can then adjust the number of intermediate points as needed. Take note, that if you set these values too high you can slow down performance the best practice here is to find the lowest value that still looks good, and also to try and get the shape of the polygons to look as square as possible, and remember you can always adjust this later. Again, for this project you'll need this dense mesh in preparation for later on. So when it comes time to do this on your own don't set values this high unless you absolutely need to. Now, going back to the scale attribute on the sweep object you can continue to adjust the shape using the spline graph. Ctrl click along the spine to add a few more points. Then drag them into place to create the basic shape for the exhaust plume. You can also click and drag the tangent handles that appear when you select a knot This allows further control over the curvature of the spline. In some cases, you may want to get a better look at the spline that your working with. So, right click on the spline graph and choose show in separate window. This will bring up a separate dialog window that you can resize providing you with a larger workspace for adjusting the spline. You can use the navigation icons in the top right corner of this window to get an even closer look at the shape you're trying to create. You can click and drag the first icon to pan the view, or click and drag the second icon to zoom in or out. If you feel adventurous, try using the same navigation shortcuts that you used in the view port as these will let you pan and and zoom as well. Once you're satisfied with the look of the exhaust plume you can close the spline draft dialogue. Now, what if you wanted to change the length of the exhaust trail? This can be done by adjusting the length of the exhaust guide. Click on the exhaust guide then increase the scale Z by entering a new value in the coordinate manager and then click "Apply". The exhaust real updates automatically, and this is because the main shape is controlled by the scale along the sweep while the spline guide only controls the length. If you aren't satisfied with the look of the exhaust after adjusting the length you can always go back to the spline graph, and make further adjustments to refine the shape. The next step is to setup the deformers is that will allow the exhaust the fall of the rocket. The first derformer you will add is the "Spline Wrap" deformer. This allows you to wrap geometry onto an existing spline in the scene. So, go to the deformer palette and add a "Spline Wrap" Since the Spline Wrap is a deformer you would usually want it to be a child of the object that it derforms, but when you start mixing generators and the former's making that the former a child of the generator can start to clutter the higher key making that the deformer a child of the generator can start to clutter the heirarchy, and in some cases can also lead to unwanted results. Just note, that this doesn't mean you should never do this so always take the time to experiment. Now, to provide a way of dealing with some of the issues that may arise when trying to deform a generator theres a second way that you can use the formers. First, you're going to select the "exhaust_Sweep", and then hit "Alt + G" or "Option + G" on the keyboard. This makes the sweep a child of a new null. Now, you'll want to make the spline wrap a child of this new null object, but when you do, nothing happens... This is because you first need to define which spline the sweep will be stretched along. So, click on the spline wrap and then go to the object tab you'll see a spline linkfield in the attributes here. For the spine wrap to have any effect you'll have to connect a spine into this link field. So, select the "Cubic" spline drawing tool from the spline palette. Then, in the top view port start clicking to set new points for the spline. With the Cubic spline the curvature of the spine is calculated automatically so there's no need to adjust tangent handles to get a nice curve. Also, don't worry too much about making this look nice this is just going to be used to make sure that the spline wrap you created is correctly set up, and then the spline will be deleted. Once you have the test spline drawn out click back on the spline wrap and then drag the spline object that was just created into the spline link field on the object tab. You will see the effect of the spine wrap immediately. This is because the deformers also deform objects at the same level in a heirarchy in addition to derforming the parent object Now, if you move the sweep out of this heirarchy you'll see that the deformation is no longer applied. Another thing to note is that because the parent object is just a null there's nothing to deform so only the objects on the same level as the deformer are affected, but if the parent object was an object made from polygons you would see a deformation applied to it as well. Now this is progress but still not really what you'd expect. Going back to the spline wrap attributes you'll find a drop down for the axis. This drop down determines which axis the object will be deformed along. Since the exhaust was initially created along the Z axis you'll want to set the axis drop down to something that matches that initial direction. In this case, setting the axis to either of the Z options will provide you with something closer to the expected results. Finally you don't want to have the exhausts a length changed by this deformer. In the object tab you'll also find a mode drop down by default this is set to "Fit Spline" changing this to keep length adjusts the exhaust so that its initial length is maintained that is the length that you set in the exhaust guide. In some cases you may see some weird deformation along the length of the exhaust even if there seems to be enough geometry to support a smooth curve. In this case, you'll need to change the number of intermediate points on the test spline. Select the test spline that you created and set the intermediate points to uniform, and then adjust the number. As you lower this value the deformation that you see will get worse. While increasing this number causes the deformation to get smoother. Now, you're almost ready to add the last deformer needed for the exhaust this will allow you to add an additional layer of detail to the smoke trail based on a Shader that you'll create later but first a different deformer that doesn't rely on a shader will be used to demonstrate how stacking the deformers works. You don't need to follow along with this but if you want to try it out feel free. So for this demonstration a wind deformer will be used. This can be found in the deformer palette. As expected nothing happens when you first add the deformer, but once you drag it into the higher key with a sweet you'll start to see in effect. By disabling the Spline Wrap you can focus just on the deformation from the Wind Deformer. By rotating and changing the position of the deformer you can change its affect on the object. so that the result is that top of the exhaust remaining unaffected, and a subtle wave is created down the length. Now, one of the special attributes of the wind deformer is that it has internal animation. So, if you hit play you can see a wave pattern move down the length of the exhaust, and again the tip remains more or less unaffected. If you re-enable the spline wrap you'll see that the exhaust is again deformed along the spline, but the animation from the wind deformer is still being applied similar to the order of splines in the sweep the order of derformers in a heirarchy affects the resulting deformation. In this case because the Wind Deformer is before the Spline Wrap and a heirarchy it is calculated first and then the result of that is wrapped along the spline. This means that if you change the offset of the Spline Wrap the exhaust slides along the spline, but the whole time that it remains firmly in place. If you place the spline wrap so that it comes before the wind deformer than that means that the object is wrapped along the spline, and then the result of that is affected by the Wind Deformer. The obvious difference is that the tip of the exhaust is also being affected, and if you change the offset in Spline Wrap you can actually end up in a situation where there's no affected all. This is because technically all of the geometry of the exhaust is behind the area of influence for the Wind Deformer. Now, while the order of the deformers matters you can actually positioned the object being performed at any point on the same level, and it will still be affected the same. So, with an idea of how the order of derformers with in a heirarchy functions you can now delete the Wind Deformer if you decided to follow along, and add a Displacer from that deformer palette. You will then place the Displacer in the heirarchy after the Spline Wrap derformer. Generally, when you work with the displacer you would set up the Shader at the same time as you create the deformer As the deformer has no effect without one. but to keep things simple and to not overwhelm you with new concepts you'll just be setting up the deformer for now The last thing that you want to do is rename the null to "exhaust_trail" Now, with the foundations for the exhaust laid out it's time to create an environment for the rocket to travel through. So save incremental and then head onto the next video or try starting a new file and mixing a few deformers together on some simpler geometry so that you can get more familiar with how stacking deformers works.
exhaust_guideと同レベルになるようにしてください。 まず、exhaust_guideをクリックしてください。 まずは、「exhaust_Sweep」を選択します。 最後に、ヌルを「exhaust_trail」に変更します。
Vá a paleta Spline e selecione a ferramenta Linear Spline. Clique primeiro no Exhaust Guide. Vá a paleta Deformer e selecione Spline Wrap.
