- Making things is nice, but breaking things is awesome. There's no better way to add life to your animations than to make things look malleable, bouncy, bendy and twisty and of course, blow them up. Everyone, please, meet William. He will help us learn how to apply Deformers. In doing that, we will put him through a fair amount of torture. But don't worry, he's fine with it. There's a host of special objects inside Cinema 4D called, Deformers. These guys can take any 3D geometry and change its shape according to certain rules. And, yes, that even applies to Primitive and Generated objects. They all live in this drop down over here and they have a bluish, purplish color, which I'm sure has a name but it's eluding me at the moment. There are two ways to apply a Deformer. Let me show them to you. Let's just go here and select the bend deformer. The first way is to make the bend deformer a child of the object you want to deform. But the Deformer needs to be placed in the proper position. So when the Deformer is selected, go to the object tab in the Attributes Manager and click fit to parent. And it assumes the bounding box of the object it's applied to. Now if I change something like the strength, you can see that William is stretching, great. The angle controls on which axis this bend occurs, fantastic. Let me zero it out, press enter. Now if you keep Y-axis length, then the bend formation becomes a bit more natural. And one and two and one and two, fantastic. Now if you want to confine the bend in a certain portion of the object, you go and change these numbers. You can see by the box that now it's effecting his waist. And you can make it conform a bit better. And now you can see that that looks ever so slightly better. Whoa, that's cool. And how do we apply it using the second way? Well, let's assume that we hadn't applied it quite yet. What you need to do is create a null and make William a child of the null or any object you're going to deform, and make sure that the Deformer is a sibling of William. So don't make it a child. Yes, it will apply. But in this case you can apply it as a sibling under a null and it will have the same effect. The difference is the following. If it's a child of the object, then by moving the object, the Deformer moves with it, undo. Where as if it's not, we can move the object trough the Deformer and it can deform based on that motion. So now I'm going to move William through the Deformer so you can see the advantages of each method. Let's select the Deformer again. And we have this mode. This is the Limited mode. Let me show you. I'm gonna make make this a bit more exaggerated. Limited bends the portion that's within the bounds of the Deformer and carries on the rest of the geometry to follow that shape. Within box only deforms the portion within the bounding box of the Deformer, and it's useful in some cases but mostly it will give you odd results, like in this case. And this must be quite painful. And the Unlimited actually carries the deformation throughout the whole object. The same concepts apply to all the Deformers. So let me go and add a bulge Deformer, make it a child, fit to parent and change their parameter. And this is good for bulging to make balls go through pipes and so forth. And let me delete this. And quickly shear again, child, fit to parent. Shear, delete, taper, twist. That's an interesting one. Fit to parent and twist. This is a Baryshnikov move as far as I remember, excellent. So let me delete this. And now I want to talk about a special Deformer. It has a very good relationship with me. Actually I have a very good relationship with him, and his name is Explosion effects. And what I'm gonna do here is make him a child of William. And there is no fit to parent. So what I'm going to do is just go and zero out the position so it's right there in the middle. And how does this work? Well, if you press play, nothing really happens. We need to animate a parameter. Now in the Object tab there's only one parameter, the time, and this indicates the explosion time. So zero is just before the explosion and as this increased to a 100% it makes the explosion grow, so to speak. So what I'm going to do at frame zero, I'm going to set a keyframe of zero. And at frame 70, I'm gonna make this 100 and click keyframe. And if I rewind and play you will see that William is destroyed. But then he's put back together again. That's the good thing about William, he's very resilient. Whenever modeling is not enough to get you the desired shape, using Deformers will give you more control over it. Just don't forget to make the Deformer a child of the geometry or a sibling under a common null parent. Happy explosions.
Felices explosiones.
