Animate Object over a Spline using the “Align to Spline” Tag.

Animating objects over a path is a very effective way to add controllable and smooth motion. Learn how to use the “Align to Spline” Tag, and a Spline to achieve that. Just make sure your object is facing the Positive Z axis. Why don’t you stop reading descriptions, and start watching the video.

- A very effective way to animate objects is animating over a path just like this spaceship. The technique is fairly easy and let me show you how it's done. In this scene, I have a cone which is going to be a stunt double for the spaceship, and I have the helix which is the spline I want to move the helix on. So I'm going to name the cone "spaceship." You have to do that, otherwise this won't work. I'm kidding, you can name it anything you want. So now I need to instruct the spaceship to move on the spline. And in order to do that, I right-click on the spaceship, go to the Cinema 4D tags, and add an align to spline tag. The align to spline tag has a spline path little entry where I have to click, hold and drag the spline. And then it has the position parameter. Which if I increase you will see that the object is going to be placed at that percentage of the spline from beginning 0 to end 100%. Great. Now we have a problem though that my nice little spaceship here is not pointing in the direction of travel. If I want to fix that, I need to tell the spaceship to orient itself with it's plus Z. So now it's pointing towards the plus Z direction and that is a direction of travel. But again if I do this, you will see that it points that way, but it doesn't twist around. We need to activate the tangential and now it's going to move on the tangent and point towards the direction of travel. Those are the two things you need to do with a primitive. So let's animate it now. Rewind set the position to 0% and add a keyframe. Go to frame 90, double-click, type in 100%, add a keyframe and now you can scrub and you will see our spaceship travel on this spline. So here's the situation with my spaceship. This is a group of objects under a null. And if I select the parent you will see that it's facing towards the negative Z. Now if I, let me close this and go and add an align to spline tag. Drop my helix in there, and activate tangential. Let me go and animate the position. You will see that my spaceship is facing backwards. So in order to solve this problem it's quite simple. You select the parent, you change your mode from model mode to axis mode, and you use your rotation tool to rotate this 180 degrees. If you press Shift, you will see it quantizes the value by 10 degrees. When it says 180 you release and now deselect this and your object is ready to fly in the correct direction. Nobody wants spaceships to go backwards. I think that's not healthy. There you go. And our spaceship is traveling in the right direction. Well, not now because I'm going backwards. So let me just animate it because I've confused you. So frame 0 position 0%, frame 160, position 100% add a keyframe, rewind, press play and now our spaceship is traveling in the correct direction. As you can see one of the simplest things you can do in Cinema 4D Lite is make an object travel on a spline. So you can animate its position based on just one parameter and once you have your spline, your object will move on it. Just add an align to spline tag. As simple as that.
