The soft selection is a mighty tool. It contains a huge amount of options and it takes a little bit of exploring to really master it. Not that it is difficult, just huge. The Soft-Selection enables some capabilities that are not duplicated with any other tools for selection.

At 12 minutes in the tutorial you will see a bit of Vertex painting and how you can store this information. There are a lot of options in the whole package of C4D, especially in combination with the deformers or Xpresso.
