Pre-rendered vs Interactive VR content

Virtual Reality content can be delivered in two forms - Pre-rendered VR Video or Interactive VR applications. Pre-rendered VR can be distributed and viewed directly on YouTube or Facebook and manipulated much like conventional video. Interactive VR offers more flexibility, but must be compiled with a game engine and distributed via a dedicated app.

- VR content can be delivered in two ways. Either pre-rendered or interactive. Pre-rendered VR content is in the form of either a 360 degree video, or a VR video which is essentially stereo 360 degree videos. And this is the type of content that you can view through YouTube. The great thing about pre-rendered content is that it can output directly from Cinema 4D and other compositing applications. It can be stored, edited and composited using the same techniques that you're familiar with from conventional video. And that also means that you can combine VR video shot on a camera with CG elements from Cinema 4D. Pre-rendered VR content is also extremely accessible because it can be viewed directly on YouTube. You don't need to download and install additional applications. And if Google Cardboard or another stereo viewer isn't available, YouTube gracefully downscales this and presents a 360 degree video, either on the mobile device or in the browser. So it's extremely versatile. The downside to pre-rended VR content is that it's big. Resolution really matters for VR because you're viewing a screen that's four inches from your face and that's magnified. And on top of that, the image has to contain all the information for a full 360 degree field of view, for each eye. So Google recommends that VR content be delivered in 4K, which is four times the size of an HD frame. And depending on how you choose to render the content, you may actually need to render 4K frames for each eye, that you'll combine later into a single 4K frame for Google. So you can expect render times up to eight times longer than a standard HD render. And here's the bad news: 4K resolution still isn't all that great. To really experience good VR, you need 8K or more. But Google currently limits us to a 4K image for both stereo screens, and quite frankly, I can't imagine rendering files that are any bigger than that. The other way you can deliver content is in an interactive form, where you actually export your 3D content from Cinema 4D into a game engine like Unity or Unreal, and allow the game engine to deliver the VR experience. Resolution is still important in interactive VR, but render time isn't a factor because the rendering is done through the game engine. And also, this allows you to deliver a more interactive experience using features like gaze control that will pop up additional content or teleport the viewer. Of course the downside to interactive VR is that much of it is a game development or programming style process, rather than a visual process like you're used to from video and compositing. So you're going to have to work with a game engine like Unity or Unreal, and you're going to have to deliver your content through a dedicated application that users will have to download separately. Both pre-rendered and interactive VR content can be viewed through Google Cardboard. It's just a matter of whether you can view it directly in the YouTube mobile app, or users whether have to download a separate application that's been compiled from the game engine. And theoretically, both can be viewed on a device like the Oculus Rift, although as I'm recording this tutorial, YouTube VR is not supported on the Rift. Here on Cineversity we're going to cover the workflow for both pre-rendered and interactive VR, so you can choose which method is the best fit, both for you and for each individual project.
